Sweets to Rot your Teeth

Post by Quentin D'Angelo on Sun Sep 08, 2013 6:47 pm

Although Quentin wasn't entirely cut off from his father, he wasn't entirely used to getting packages instead of letters. When the parcel delivered by their family owl dropped in front of him during breakfast, Quentin was pleasantly surprised and grinned widely before ripping the parcel open. It was filled with goodies, mostly candy, but also had a note and a small gift wrapped up. Quentin was beside himself with joy as he quickly unwrapped a piece of candy and popped it into his mouth before turning to the envelope. With his index finger, he tore it open and removed the letter, reading it over while helping himself to a few more pieces of candy. He nearly choked on it as he read the first line.

'My Dear Odette' It read. The package wasn't for him, it was his sisters and had just so happened to have gotten mixed up and sent to him instead. He heaved a crestfallen sigh as he dropped the candy in his hand back into the box. It no longer tasted good to him knowing that it hadn't been purchased for him in the first place. The letter said the gifts were in congratulations on Odette getting sorting, but why hadn't he gotten the slightest token besides a 'good job' when she did. He couldn't help but feel that it was some sort of favoritism towards her, but he didn't want to think of that. He needed to find Odie and tell her the mistake.

Standing up, he scanned the room to find his sister, but couldn't find her among the rest of the Montagnards. He walked around a bit, trying to spot her familiar face but it appeared that she might've left already. He really didn't feel like chasing her around to return it at that moment, already feeling down because he deserved candy too but Daddy never bought him any gifts while he was at school. He looked down at the box again. Why shouldn't at least a little bit of it be his own? He was sure Odie would've shared it with him anyway, this was just him saving the step of asking her. His mind had become made up as he spotted a different familiar Montagnard that he knew would just love to have some of the candy as well. Odie would definitely be happier with him if she knew he hadn't just taken the candy for himself, but shared it with a friend. He offered a smile as he headed towards his friend. "Hey Caleb! Guess what I've got?" He hide the box behind his back to allow his friend to make an unbiased guess.

Caleb had been in a slump after he had ran out of candy a third year had got him. his source of candy was cut. He had no way of getting anymore since the rest of his money was to be used for emergencies. Caleb saw no emergency, but his mother was sure to figure out that he had spent his money on candy if he had none left. He was pretty sure that people noticed that he wasn't his usual upbeat self. How could he be if he had no joy left? Nothing to smile for? Well, besides his friends and cat, he had nothing to smile for.

When a familiar face came closer to him, Caleb smiled a bit. He had misses his friend and was happy to see him. A summer seemed like forever. "Hey Quinn!" His smile was bigger and he was acting more like himself. What could he have behind his back? It had to be something small because it was well hidden behind his back. "Hmm....you shrunk a zebra! And now its small enough for you to hide behind your back and you can now put him in your pocket." What was a good name for a zebra? Frank? Carlos? Logan? It must depend on the gender. Miranda? Jesse? Abby?

Quinn smiled at his best friend, humored by his ever whimsical ideas. He couldn't help but laugh at the notion of a small zebra and one all for himself that he could keep in his pocket. "I wish!" He replied. "But I think what I've got is much better!" He then brought forth the box he concealed behind his back for Caleb to see.

"Candy! You're favorite! I can't believe it wasn't the first thing you thought of!" Quentin mused. Actually, he was slightly worried that it wasnt the first thing his candy loving friend said. He thought all of Caleb's thoughts revolved around sugar. "Look at how much I've got! Enough for both you and me!" He grabbed a handful and gave it to his friend to start, feeling butterflies in his stomach as he knew it was wrong. The candy belonged to Odette. He shook his head. He was going to enjoy this candy with his friend if it was the last thing he did.

Caleb frowned because wasn't a mini zebra after all. It would have been really cool if it was. But his face lit back up with the mention of candy. "Candy! Thanks!" After his mother took his sweets away, Caleb tried his best to get ahold of the sweet treat. His sources were running low since he was out of extra money. "Mother took my candy away and I didn't have any and know I do. So I'm happy again!" Though the candy would run out sooner or later. "I had Payton buy me sweets but I ran out of money."

He popped a piece into his mouth, oh how he missed the sweet taste. He smiled more at the taste, it was so delicious. He couldn't tell if it was a mix of strawberry or raspberry or both. "That's really good. Where'd ya get it? I wanna buy some for myself once I get more money. Or I'll beg my mother to get me some. When I'm not in school since I'm not supposed to have candy at school."

Quentin smiled along with Caleb. He couldn't imagine how his candy-addicted best mate was getting along without his daily dose and would've hated to have seen the lad sad. Caleb had always tried to make Quinn feel better when he was sad and therefore Quinn was glad that he had decided to give him some of the candy, of all people. He tried to further justify his actions by thinking that if Odie had gotten the package as planned, she wouldn't have shared the sweets with the sweet-lacking Caleb Miller.

He munching along through the stache of candy, perfectly content, when Caleb asked the question; Where did it come from. "Ummmm," Quentin uttered, chewing slowly and finding that the sweet candy just lost it's taste with the moment of bitter realization. "I got it from home," He answered, a bit ashamed. He showed the box that it had come in and hoped that Caleb didn't notice the inscription on the box or the wrapped up gift that was still inside.

Caleb was super happy, munching on the sweets/ After not having the candy for so long,he missed the taste of the sugar on his tongue. Something about Quinn changed once Caleb had asked the question, but Caleb wasn't sure what had changed. But Caleb ignored his change in mood, if he wanted to tell him what was bothering him.

"You'll have to ask for more, its very good." He studied the box that Quinn held into view. "Wait, that's not your name. Its your last name, but not your first name. This candy isn't for you, is it?" Caleb pushed his remaining candy away. "Time for the truth."

So Caleb had noticed the address and that made Quinn feel all the worse. He swallowed the candy that was in his mouth and opted out of taking more, finding no more joy in having kept the package for himself from that point on. Now he just felt guilty. What an awful thing he had done to his sister, who hadn't done a single thing to him in return.

"That's because it's not...exactly...for me," Quentin started to explain. "It's my sister's." He admitted. "But the owl got mixed up and came to me instead. I was so excited because I never get mail and opened it and then found out later it was actually for Odie. I don't know, it's really stupid now that I think about it, but I figured that maybe she wouldn't have minded if I took it for myself. No doubt she's going to be sent more, right?" Quentin sighed. "I'm an awful brother, aren't I?"

"You're not an awful brother, you just made a mistake. I'm sure she'll forgive you if you explain what happened and why you did what you did." Caleb gave his friend's hand a squeeze while giving him a small smile. "No need to beat yourself up, everyone makes mistakes. I make mistakes all the time." Like exploding potions, taking his cat to class, and other things. "Just apologize to her, I'm sure she'll understand."

"Why don't you get mail? If your sister gets mail from home, then why don't you get any?" Caleb had never seen a letter or package in Quinn's hands now that he thought about it. "That's a bit unfair." A frown pulled at Caleb's lips. "I know!" Caleb's face brightened up. "Once its summer, I'll write you and send you candy and all that jazz!" Caleb liked that plan a lot and thought it was a great plan.
