Pile with a Bang Empty Pile with a Bang

Having a job was something which really freed Linette up for book buying. She didn't have the extra financial expenses her father had at her age. She was living on her own and whilst not single she still had her own life to lead. No children. No anything else other than rent and food and taxes. And maybe one or two expenses which had escaped her mind at that moment in time.

Right now she was floating a pile of books in front of her, bought from both bookshops in Amethyst and Whisper Allies. It'd been a while and Linette had thought it was high time she did something to supplement the books she usually bought at her place of work. Most of what she'd owned had been read three or more times over and The Book Cellar only ever had in what the owner managed to procure from sellers.

The pub was crowded but Linette managed to maneouver herself and her books around various people before spying what she thought was an empty table. The books were lowered with a thud and Linette smiled with satisfaction before registering the other person there. A young girl. "Oh sorry there. Didn't mean to startle you. Did I startle you? Well never matter. If anything is damaged I'll find some way of repaying you. Oh and do you mind if I sit here? I don't really want to have to move this lot to yet another table with this crowd around us." She craned her neck to look around and then back at the girl. "Besides none of the tables look empty at the moment."

Pile with a Bang Empty Re: Pile with a Bang

Serah needed a break. Stress from school was crowding her mind. She needed to be in a place that was loud enough to the point where she could no longer think.

La Petit Dragon seemed like the place to go.

So a little before lunch time, Serah walked through town and walked into the pub.

It wasn't very crowded. She found a table, sat down, closed her eyes, and tried to get lost in the sounds.

Serah must have fallen asleep, because the next thing she heard was the sound of something dropped on the table in front of her.

Serah's eyes snapped open. She realized that La Petit Dragon was completely full. The sound she heard was one of books being laid on a table.

The witch who had put them there apologized and asked to sit down.

"Sure. Yyou can sit. I don't mind," Serah answered.

Serah was wary of her at first, but the witch didn't look very far out of her teens, so she wasn't afraid for long. "I'm Serah. What books are yyou rreading?"

Linette pushed the books to one side and sat at the table upon the younger witch's invitation. A much younger witch by the look of her. "Thanks," she said with a relieved sigh. "I may have been able to levitate these things but it still feels like I just physically carried them. I probably should have used the feather light charm instead." She looked at the pile and shook her head. "Nah. Both together would be best. What do you think? Oh wait I hadn't introduced myself. I'm Linette."

She turned the pile sideways to give Serah a glimpse of the titles. "First up A History of Romania's Magic. That interested me because you know Vampires are rumoured to come from there. I was curious as to if they get a mention in here." Linette nodded sagely. "Next comes Clementine's Troubles. Fiction just to even it out between fact and fiction. There needs to be some sort of balance." She turned the pile back the other way again when she realised some of the titles were ones a witch of Serah's age should not be exposed to just yet. "The rest you needed worry about. They're for people advanced in magic and stuff. I was just curious about their contents. So tell me. Are you first year or second?"

"Nice to meet you," Serah answered.

"I'm a first year. I don't really know any magic yet-t. So your guess is better than mine."

"Cool. I like t-to read. I have two books at home, but I go to the Muggle library a lot."

"I've been to Romania. They have a lot of pretty castles. Some are even bigger than Beauxbatons. I've never seen a vampire."

Serah laughed in her head. She'd never considered vampires before. But it wouldn't surprise her if they existed. If there was one thing she knew for sure, it was that magic was real.

"Fiction is good, Serah said, nodding. "Sometimes it's easier to believe than fact."

"How was Beauxbatons for you? Did you have a good experience?" Serah asked.

She didn't mean to ask that question to an almost-stranger, but now that it was out in the open, she really wanted to know the answer.

Linette nodded sagely. "Yes it would be. The older you get the better your magic gets. Just you wait until your my age and free to cast a spell anywhere or at least anywhere that muggles aren't around to see. That's probably about the only restriction I have and I don't usually venture out in amongst the muggles anyway."

She smiled at the girl's admission. "Reading is enjoyable. I wish I was able to go to the muggle library when I was your age." She sighed. "But alas I was stuck with reading everything we had ten times over except at birthdays and Christmas when I'd be given one or two as gifts. Mind you I still enjoy re-reading my old favourites and normally prefer second hand books to new. Every so often I make an exception." She nodded toward the pile. "Such as these which I can't get second hand."

Linette laughed and nodded. "So true. Some of the stuff I learnt in History sounded like the sorts of things you would read in fiction rather than be deeds done in the past."

"Yes. I loved everything about Beauxbatons. Almost everything. I didn't appreciate being given a prefect badge in fifth year. Beware of those things. They cause trouble and you're expected to act responsibly." She rolled her eyes as she added, "it was unfortunate that was exactly what happened to me. I became shockingly responsible."

"I feel like I'm not-t-t going t-to be able to d-d-do any magic. I feel like that's any witch or wizard's fear," Serah answered,

"I live in Maardu, Estonia. The wizarding community lives kind of on the outskirts of town, but most of the wizards work in town. I'm in the Muggle area more often than not," Serah said nodding.

"I've always been responsible. I spend-d a lot of time alone. I'm t-t-taking advantage of the fact that I can be a little reckless," Serah said.

"I just wondered about Beauxbatons. I don't know howw I feel about it yet-t. I haven't met a lot of people. Not that I haven't tried," Serah said with a hint of bitterness in her voice. "But I feel like it can only get better."

"How did you end up as a prefect? Did people vote fffor you?" Serah asked.

At this point in time, she had no idea how Beauxbatons worked. No one had explained anything to her.

Linette shook her head. "I can't say I had that fear but I can tell you that if you got a letter then you already can do magic. No ifs, buts or maybes. You're a witch and you should be proud of it."

She smiled at the explanation. "Ooh Estonia. Lucky you. The furthest I've been is England and I regularly went to Luxemborg when I was younger. My mother lives there. Before I left home I lived in the wizard area of a mostly muggle village but we hardly visited the muggle area."

"Really? You must be so much better than I was at your age and I was alone a lot myself." she laughed. "Old Aunt Patrice would get all sorts of mad when I'd do something irresponsible. She was't my real aunt but rather my father's housekeeper. I have no idea how he found the money to pay her when we never had that much to begin with." It was possibly the one mystery Linette had yet to solve in regard to her family.

"Oh come on," Linette chided. "The school year hasn't even begun. You just wait until you're in that carriage or at school. Then you'll start making all sorts of friend. Guarantee it."

"Not at all. If it was worked out that way I would never have become prefect." She paused. "At least I hope not. You never can tell what your classmates might think. The Headmistress makes the prefect decisions. I don't think she trusts us to make good judgements."

"Children see the world for what it is. Maybe the headmistress knows what you all would pick. She's the eyes and ears of the school, right?" Serah asked, not actually knowing what a headmaster does.

"I've never vacationed to the eastern side of Europe. My father is an artist, so we go to places where there are lots of landscape. France is the furthest I've been. Do you live around here?" Serah asked. The kids she had met were all from France, so she was hoping for someone who spoke a language she was more comfortable with.

"Yeah. I have time to make friends. It's just scary, ya know? Being home schooled can be good or bad." Serah hoped that homeschooling was helpful and not detrimental.

Linette shrugged. She wasn't sure she agreed with the statement since she was pretty certain the way she saw things when she was young turned out to be wrong. Her parents divorcing for example had been a surprise. "I suppose she is but don't you think voting is usually about popularity and not who would be best. I know I'd have voted for a friend rather than someone who may be better for the school."

She nodded. "Well not so much around here as in France. I live in Cheval which is the village closest to the school. And we do have something in common. I've never been to eastern Europe either. One day though. One day. Just as soon as I get a better paying job."

"I've never really given it much thought. Homeschooling was the only option available to me. It was either that or dad risking his job."

"Your dad risking his job? Does he work in the Ministry or something?"

Serah had only heard about the ministry from her dad. Her dad had done a portrait for one of the higher-up's family. He had furiously worked for weeks on the painting, that's the only reason she remembered.

"Home schooling was-s better for me. My stutter would not have gone over-r well in muggle school," Serah said, trying to sound mature.

"I would've vvvoted for you, if I had the chance. I don't care about popularity much. It's too complicated."

"Where do you work now? I'm guessing a place where you can read," Serah asked, eyeing the books on the table.

Linette nodded. "Yeah and his boss can be a little funny about muggles. Hence we only stuck to the wizarding section of Frejus."

"Well I guess kids can be a little funny about differences. Never understood that myself. It's our differences which makes life that little more interesting." She gave an amused smile as she added, "so long as that difference doesn't result in my pain in the neck brother."

"That's nice of you to say so but I don't think I would have thanked you for it." She pulled a face as she added, "I hated it so much. The younger students who hadn't known me before that will look at me with fear as though I were watching out for rule breaking. That's a good idea. Stay away from the crazy idea that you have to be popular."

She grinned. "The Book Cellar in the Village of Cheval near the school. It's the best book shop around in that I was able to afford the books because they were second hand. When you reach third year be sure to go and have a look. I can't guarantee I'll be working there anymore as I plan to apply for a job with a newspaper."
