Mishap in the Library Empty Mishap in the Library

Post by Guest Sat Mar 15, 2014 11:00 pm

Philip was getting bored with the books he had brought from home. So, what better place to look than the library. (There was no other place really.) He also hadn't been able to really explore the library yet. The library was huge and put the private library in his home to shame. Philip explored the various shelves, pulling books out that seemed interesting then sticking them back into place when proven otherwise.

He looked up and saw a flash of blonde hair. Charlie! He hadn't seen her all day, now that he thought about it. So, he rushed over to the girl. "Char-" Oh...nope...that was not his best friend. In fact, he didn't really know who this was. "Oh, er, sorry, I thought you were someone else..."

"Oh, don't worry, it's totally fine." Harley's blonde hair made a curtain around her face and kept anybody from seeing past it, making her the victim of many wrong identity mishaps. "My name's Harley. Harley Fenwick. You're Philip, right?" She knew he was, she knew who everyone was at the Montagnard table like the back of her hand. She was just nearly positive that he had no clue who she was, and wanted to give him at least a sliver of his dignity by letting him think that she didn't really know him.

"Are you looking for a particular book?" Harley asked, noticing the maroon, leather bound book in his hand. "I know this place front and back. I could probably recite to you every book and its summary-." She stopped. Harley sighed in near defeat. Rambling about herself was a problem she could easily admit she had, and it commonly made her seem like a narcissist. "I mean, I can help you find a book. If you want, of course," she said, a bit quieter this time.

"You just look an awful lot like my friend." He shrugged then offered his hand. "Nice to meet you, Harley." He smiled and wondered how she knew his name. "Uh, yeah, I'm Philip. Philip Bracknell." Not that last names were important, he just mentioned his because she provided hers. "You're in Montagnard? I've never seen you around before."

Philip looked at the book his hand and nodded. "Yeah, I needed something new to read." He grinned at her. It was kind of interesting how similar she was to Charlie. She started babbling like her too. "How do you know all the books and their summaries?" He asked in awe. "That's admirable." He chuckled.

She sighed. Of course he hadn't seen her around. Blending in to crowds was something she did just fine, something she did without even trying. It was easy, a little fake laugh here and the occasional word or two and everybody else thought nothing of her. "Oh, I probably sit far from you at the table, and I don't spend to much time at the common room. I spend most of my time here," she said, waving towards the walls of books.

"I have secret that I usually don't tell people. It makes me look like a major nerd, and not the good kind, or an attention seeker. Ugh, I hate attention seekers," she said in momentary disgust. She snapped back and looked around. "I have an eidetic memory, I can remember everything I've read, but only that. It's how I know computer code so well."

"I don't spend much time in the common room either. I'm usually in my dorm room or hanging out in Cerisier or outside. I like taking walks." Not that the latter was an important fact that she desperately needed to know. "I don't have many...er...any friends in our house." He admitted.

"I think it's pretty cool, actually. Not nerdy at all." He grinned at her. Philip wished he had her hidden skill. It'd make things a lot easier for himself. "I don't think you're an attention seeker either." He added with a smile. "Computer code?" Jeez, it was like she was Charlie's doppelgänger.

"I don't have many friends period," Harley awkwardly laughed. "Taking walks is nice, but have you gone out to the stables? The Pegasi that live there are gorgeous. I nearly got myself into a detention just so I could take care of one," she reminisced.

"You actually think it's cool? No offense, but it's horrible. I have over twenty facts just about grapefruits in here," she said, tapping her temple. "Did you know that drinking grapefruit juice while taking medication can cause an instant overdose and possibly death?" She asked, even though she knew he wouldn't. After all, who did besides the weirdo with the big brain. "Anyways, any particular genre you're looking for or anything?" She walked a little distance to find the rolling ladder where she had last placed it, by the How to Find a Mermaid Habitat section, and rolled it over to where they were.

He shook his head. "I haven't been to the stables." They hadn't really peaked his interest, nor did he wander around the particular area of the grounds. "How'd you end up with detention because of that?"

"Okay, I see your point." He shrugged again. In theory being able to know all of that stuff sounded like it was a good thing. Maybe his thought process was if he knew all that stuff he would be able to keep up with Charlie. Philip just let Harley continue on in her babbling about grapefruits and overdosing. "Ah, no not really. I'm open to reading anything."

Harley chuckled softly, thinking to the unfortunate mishap at the stables. "Let's just say it involved a bucket of water, a pitchfork, my magic acting up, me nearly releasing a Pegasus, and a Professor who saw it all." She had to take care of the garden now because of it, but tending the lawn was easy.

She knew that he probably didn't understand, but she also could see that he was trying too. "Yeah, try accidentally memorizing the first four-hundred digits of pi on accident," she said. It wasn't just grapefruits and pi, though. It was computer code, I.P. Adresses, and more importantly, Wifi passwords. There would always be perks to Harley's special brain, like having free Wifi no matter whose house you went to. "Okay, then. You seem like a guy who knows about being a Muggle, so no Human-How-To books," she said, mentally pulling hundreds of books about Muggles off their imaginary shelves.

"Oh! I know just the book!" She pulled the ladder along with her to a couple sections down and climbed up it nimbly. "Yes! It's here!" She tossed the book down to him before climbing halfway down and jumping the rest. "Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them. It's my favourite, and it has every magical creature known to the Ministry, even the rarest."

“You could right a book.” He laughed, shaking his head. “That sounds awful. I’m shocked that you didn’t end up with a detention if a Professor caught all of that.” Philip was going to try his hardest not to end up with a detention. Though, he was just a first year, anything could happen. His mother would have his skin if he ever got into trouble like that.

“Accidentally? How do you accidentally remember the first four hundred numbers of something?” He looked at her with wide eyes. Dang, this girl really was a walking encyclopedia. “I’m shocked that I give off the Muggle vibe. My mother..uh… isn’t very keen on them.” He admitted, he didn’t usually admit stuff like that to people right off that bat. Kind of turned people away from him.

He caught the book and grinned at the all too familiar cover. Philip was always seeing Charlie read it (she practically had the book memorized) and he hadn’t even picked it up himself to read yet. “Thanks.” He grinned up at her.

"You see one poster on International Pi Day with the first four-hundred numbers written down on it and 'Bam!' it's stuck there, always a part of you," she shrugged, dusting her hands off on her skirt. "And it's not that you give off a real vibe, so to say. You just do the common mannerisms of Muggle guys I know. It's barely noticeable, so don't worry about it. And at least your parents didn't leave you at home when you were eight years old and never came back just because they were scared of having a family witch."

Harley had always been a child prodigy, the perfect daughter, but as soon as her mom and dad found out about her powers, they packed up and moved to God knows where without her. She shook it off though and smiled, "Yeah, definitely check out the winged animals section, they're the coolest."

She laughed before reciting a short paragraph about her favourite animal, the Hippogriff. "A Hippogriff is a magical creature that has the front legs, head, and wings of a giant eagle, whilst having the hind legs and tail of a horse. Not to be confused with Griffins, Hippogriffs have pointed gray beaks and large orange eyes for hunting. Along with their sharp talons, which are an average of 6 inches long, the Hippogriff is considered as one of the deadliest beasts known."

“Ah…” Yeah, that did sound like it sucked. Maybe it was better that he was a potato. He just needed to study more was his issue and y’know, retain the information. “My mother is very conservative.” He shrugged. Philip didn’t care about any of that stuff though. He didn’t find it important.

He stared blankly at her while she spoke about her family. “That…that actually happened to you?” That’s horrible! He had never really considered what Muggles did when they realized their child was magical. He just assumed they were all ecstatic over the fact.

He smiled up at her. “Winged animals? I’ll remember that.” Hippogriffs? He was trying to remember what Charlie said about those. Oh, nope, it was the griffins that she spoke about. “What are some of the other deadliest beasts?”

She nodded stiffly before realizing he meant no harm in asking her and wasn't trying to pry. "Yeah, I had a younger sibling too. He was five, almost six, when he left with them. I remember reading to him every night because he was the only one in my family that wasn't scared of me. His favourite was that book," she said, leaning her head in the direction of the book he was holding. "I found a copy in the school courtyard when I was walking home."

She went through her mental file system, it was a way she kept everything organized and neat in her head. Without it, she would probably be insane by now. "There are basilisk, which are extremely deadly creatures and nearly impossible to kill due to their petrifying stare and poisonous venom. Dragons are also on that list, due to their fiery breath and tough, nearly impenetrable skin. Thestrals are an commonly unheard of creature, but they are deadly if provoked by humans, otherwise they only eat animals. The have strong wings allowing them to fly at fast speeds for hours, sharp fangs, and they can't been seen by most people, wizards and muggles. There are a couple more on the list, but I doubt you want to hear them all. It would scare you out of sleeping at night," she chuckled.
