Galen sat alone by the lake and smiled at the water scooping it into his hands and then letting it fall through his fingers. He repeated the process several times. He hadn't seen Stephanie all summer because his mother had been busy a lot and he didn't want to burden her. Then his sister had talked about going to Hogwarts because of their dad and so she went there and he was frustrated and he needed to hang out with Stephanie. He'd written to her and stuff, but he didn't know if she wanted to be friends with him anymore. He'd passed a note to her in class asking her to come by the lake at the end of the day. He just wanted to hang out with his best friend, well his friend, well his acquaintance. He heard someone behind him and turned around to look at them.

Stephanie had a little more confidence in her step this year than last year. She had more idea of the new world around her and the owl she'd chosen as a pet had charmed her entire family. That was an improvement on the previous summer when her father's face looked a little shocked at the pet she'd chosen.

Right now, after a day of lessons, she hurried down to the lake as per Galen's invitation. "Hi," she called out in greeting as she saw him turn around. She sat down next to him with a bright smile on her face. School may be a struggle with her inability to concentrate for any good length of time but the environment around her more than made up for it. "Did you get all your notes written down for History of Magic? 'Cause I think I missed a lot."

The corners of Galen's cheeks stretched into a smile. "Hey, there." He wanted to tell his lips to shut off a smile, but then again he was way too broody. He needed to smile more, maybe laugh a little. "Hey." He smiled a little wider when she sat with him. He chuckled lightly. "Yes, yes, I got the history of magic notes. What distracted you this time?" He asked softly. "I know it's difficult, but it might help you if you focus harder..." He trailed off as he pulled the notes from his bag. "Any idea in particular where you started to lose focus in the note taking process?"

"A tiny spider climbing over my quill," Stephie replied. "I don't know where it came from but there it was and I watched it creep all over the feather." She sighed and pushed her hair back. "I've tried but it's so hard to focus when there are so many other things and daydreams calling out to me." Stephanie picked up a stick and dug into the ground with it. "History of Magic is especially dangerous for that because sometimes I picture myself in the middle of the history the professor is talking about. Like goblin wars or the beginning of the French Ministry of Magic or ...." She trailed of and shrugged. "You see my problem?"

Galen smiled a little. It was hard not to find her to be a charming best friend, even if she was distracted so often. "I have an idea." Galen grinned a little. "I could teach you how to focus. I mean if you wanted me to-I mean it's in my own way to teach you how to focus, but it might be fun." Galen nibbled the corner of his lip. "I could draw you, but it's something that requires sitting still." He was excited now so he started to ramble. "I could just do a portrait of you for right now, but later, we could move onto focusing on emotions, and that would require you to stick to a specific thought, and slowly and eventually who knows, you might be able to focus perfectly." Galen bit his lip again. He knew he was rambling, and it kind of embarrassed him.

Stephanie wasn't at all sure how well anyone could teach her to focus. Certain members of her family had tried and failed. How would someone her own age manage it? She could give it a try. She nodded. "Okay. We could try that. Keeping still is going to be very difficult though." Almost too difficult and Stephie wasn't at all sure how well she'd do. "Let me just move now to get more comfortable." She stood and shook her legs before sitting down on the ground again with her legs tucked away to one side. She leaned the opposite way with her arm straight and her hand resting against the ground so she wouldn't fall over. "Okay I'm ready."

Galen smiled widely. Okay, this could work. It definitely could work. He could draw someone. Drawing someone would be terrifying though. What if she hated it, or it came out bad and she took offense? He was best at figure drawing, sure, but now there was pressure. He thanked Merlin she chose a somewhat easy position to draw and began his sketch, starting with the shape of her head. He nibbled on the corner of his lip studying her before going back to his sketch book, one of his biggest habits came into effect. He held pencils at the end near the tip because of this he always had graphite on his hand. When he was thinking he'd rub the top of his hand on the top of his nose and the graphite would smudge on the end of his nose making a big black dot on the tip of it. Soon her body began to appear on the paper.

Keeping still wasn't easy. There was a buzzing bee nearby and Stephie was tempted to run off and look for it. Or just turn her head. She also wanted to lean forward to see how Galen was doing with his drawing. Instead she made herself picture her family at home. Them and her pretty little scops owl whom they'd all fawned over last holidays. With all the treats she'd been given it was a wonder that Ariane hadn't gotten fat and unable to fly.

Soon enough she'd run out of daydreams involving her owl. "Can I..." She stopped as a flutter of wings distracted her and Stephie moved. "Ariane. Is that my reply?" The owl landed on the ground in front of her with a letter attached to her leg. Obviously from Marie, the sister Stephie had hoped to hear back from. She then realised belatedly what she'd done. "Oh. Galen I'm so sorry."

Galen was actually impressed with how still she was. It was so hard for people to stay still when he drew them. Hmm...maybe this would be mutually beneficial after all. Then, it became clear Stephie's focus had totally broken. He smiled a little to himself, containing the eye roll that was just beneath the surface of his put together composure. And when her focus totally broke something rare happened. A soft sound came from Galen. It wasn't the manliest sound in the world, but he was literally giggling. It was so funny to watch people break concentration to him since it was so easy for him to keep it. "It's fine." He promised.

"Ariane come here," Stephie cooed as she reached for the owl and detached the letter. "I can read this later," she assured Galen and shoved the letter into her pocket. "Okay. Are you ready again? I'll try to get myself back into position. Oh and can you include Ariane in the drawing." She pulled the owl further toward herself. "She can keep very still."

Having a drawing of her owl would be even better than just a drawing of herself. "Now Ariane make sure you don't even fluff up a feather. Got that?" She patted the owl's wing before settling herself back into the position she'd assumed before the interruption.

Galen was going to pack up his things, but Stephanie seemed adamant about him finishing the artwork so he left his stuff out and flipped his sketchbook back open. "Yeah, let's try again." He smiled softly then nodded again. "Of course I can include your owl." He said definitively. "I can trust that she will stay still. It's you I'm concerned about." He teased. Galen yawned softly and his cheeks reddened in embarrassment. It was so rude to yawn in public his mother had often told him. "Sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to yawn." He said quickly not wanting to offend his only friend. He sighed internally. That made him feel terrible that he only had one friend, but he ignored it and quickly went back to sketching.

Stephie smiled at his teasing. It was friendly and so she didn't mind the dig at all. "I'll try extra hard so's I can set a good example for Ariane," she promised. This time with the little scops owl on the ground in front of her Stephanie found it just that little bit easier to keep still.

The next interruption had nothing to do with her or Ariane. Stephie giggled at his apology. "Don't worry. I just hope I don't start doing the same." And she didn't for at least five minutes but the more she sat trying not to think about yawning the more it was in her mind until she had to yawn herself. She smiled sheepishly. "Oops. Sorry. It just happened."

Galen smiled softly in spite of himself. There was just something about her personality that was just really amusing. She was so care free and happy. Galen was actually kind of jealous. He didn't ever get to be so care free about anything like she was. He half wondered how she saw the world. He'd finished drawing her face so it wasn't that disruptive to speak with her. When he looked to the sky it wasn't the dull light blue. He could see every flicker of every hue of every shade that hid itself into the endless ocean of sky. "You can talk now, Stephie." He said softly. His mind for once was elsewhere, but his hands were focused on drawing her.

Stephie fell into a daydream whilst Galen drew. It was such a lovely one involving her flying with such great ease. Now she was really eager to read that reply Marie had sent her. Had she figured out a way to talk daddy into forking out a lot of money for a broom. It was such a difficult thing to explain to a family whose concept of a broom was for sweeping and Stephanie had a feeling a flying broom might cost as much as a bike. Her daydream had now turned into worry and she absently began to chew on her lower lip.

Galen's words penetrated her worries and Stephie moved. "I need a broom," she suddenly blurted out and then flushed. "Oh. Sorry. I didn't mean to say that out loud. Are you nearly finished your drawing yet?" She felt an urge to stretch her legs but managed to resist as she waited for the precise moment when Galen told her she could move.
