Odette did not get much time outside, so when she was able to go out she immediately took that opportunity. She found herself by Silverlakes h,e never really liked watet. It scared her. She had always had a fear of falling in and drowing, usually allowing her to stay away from it. She sighed and walked along trying to keep herself warm, but suddenly she heard the familiar sound of her competitivly annoying friend. If you could call him a friend. She looked at him as he skidded across the ice of the lake, she rolled her eyes. He was such a dork, but the way he was on the ice made her uneasy. She certainly didnt trust the inital thing.

One of Fane's favorite past times was doing something that he absolutely shouldn't be doing. He was pretty sure that ice skating on the dubiously frozen ice was one of those things that just wasn't allowed by the strict Beauxbatons, which was exactly why Fane had strapped on his best pair of boots and wobbled onto the ice. He jumped on the edge where the shore met the frozen liquid and found it to hold him, so he walked further.

Within moments, his strides turned into slides and Fane found, much to his pleasure, how smooth it was. He was starting to try out more daring tricks when he found one of his favorite playmates bundled up and walking by the edge of the lake. He yelled and waved his arms to catch her attention. "Hey! Come skate with me!" He invited, and in case she decided to turn him down, he added, "Or are you too afraid!?"

Odette had been just trying to stay unnoticed by her 'sworn enemy.' Suddenly she heard him call out, and she knew that he was talking to her she turned and found herself being challenged by the young boy. "Or are you too afraid!?" He called. She bit her lip hard. It was true, she was terrified by the water. She did not want to go on to it if she could help it...but him getting under her skin and challenging her like he normally did, made her a bit uneasy.."I...I..." she stuttered, "I can't really.....I..." she did not how to explain it..but she knew was going to get Hell for it.

He saw the look in her face change to one that looked genuinely worried. Fane often didn't care about others too much, but he had definitely seen that weak look before and knew she was afraid of something. He looked beneath his combat boots and pieced it together. "You're afraid of water?" He asked, much softer and much less mischievous like. He understood. He would rather die than have someone find out what little thing really scared him.

His feet glided even closer to the edge and he walked onto the stony shore of the beach, onto the snow, his hands extended towards her. "It's all frozen now. You've got nothing to worry about! C'mon!" He said, encouragingly, taking hold of her hands and pulling her towards the ice. "Just take it one step at a time. You'll have fun! I promise!"

He wasn't exactly sure why he was acting so nice. Maybe because he just wanted someone to play with. Maybe because he actually did pity her. But he knew he'd get her out onto the ice, because quitting wasn't an option to him.

Odette bit her lip and stepped back. She was genuinely frightened and she knew that Fane had caught on to that. Fear was not something that was easily forgotten..and knowing Fane, she would never hear the end of it, if she showed she was afraid. However, he wasn't being a menace, like he normally was. His face was softening and this was a completely new side of Fane..he was compassionate and wanted her to have a good time..sort of..but most of all he seemed to care. She smiled a little bit, "Fane...I..." she started, slightly reluctant to tell him about her fear, even though he had clearly figured it out.

"I can't...." she said stepping away from his outstretched arms. "I don't know how to swim or skate...or whatever....I just...you know...usually stay away from water..." she admitted sadly...he was being so sweet and genuine, she couldn't help but tell him what was her problem. "I don't trust water...I just...when I was little...I had this beautiful ring...it was white gold with a little ice blue diamond in the middle..but one day I was playing by the lake with my brother...but it fell into the lake. I was so attached to it...because it was one of the only things I had from my mother...she left when I was a baby...but I jumped in...not knowing how to swim and Quinn...if he hadn't been there...I wouldn't be here..." she said smally. "That's why I'm so scared of water....I'm afraid of drowning....not being swim...slipping under...loosing my breath and drowing as the pressure crushes me and water fills my lungs...it just...scares me..."

He didn't blame Odette for being afraid or for trying to back out. He, himself, was secretly horrified of the dark and wouldn't dare leave his dorm at night without filling the space with light from his wand. His fear was irrational. Odette's, a bit more rational, and certainly something that, from his point of view, she could get over. He wasn't going to let her back out. If she left, who would he play with? The chances of Mabel next coming across his path were slim. It had to be Odette.

Her hands in his, still trying to lead her to the water, Fane remained relentless in convincing her to join him. "But there is no water! See? It's all ice!" He took a step on the ice and then stomped on it with his combat boots. The ice remained firm. "I can teach you how to skate. It's just like walking, really." He grinned at her, losing the soft compassion in his face, but still showing interest. "And if the sun falls down from the sky and melts the lake or whatever, you can feel confident to know that you've got one of the school's hotties to save you. Think of how awesome it would be to be rescued by the tall, dark, handsome me!" He played, chuckling a bit. "C'mon! Give it a try!"

Odette smiled at him. He was being sweet which made her feel somewhat, safe. She looked at his outstretched arms. She took the internal decision to trust him, even though he was being a complete dork about it. Take his hands and she stepped onto the ice and her seemed to support her weight fine so she took another step and it made her slide with Fane. She laughed lightly. "Whoa!!" She exclaimed "This is so fun!!" She laughed again. She was having a fun time, but as Fane started to let go she held a tighter grip. "Please don't leave me!!" She said frightenedly and held onto his hands tightly. "Don't let go!" She looked at him with deeply worried expression.

Step one, to get Odette on the ice, was complete. Step two, to actually teach her how to skate, was another matter. He held her hands, allowing her to sturdy herself on his own being, and slowly moved, skating backwards. "It's like walking. Just one step, slide, then the next step. It's easy! Just make sure to keep your balance," He spoke as they moved, starting out slowly, but soon picking up to a casual speed. He really wanted to go faster, but he couldn't with her hands locked on his. "Ready to try it on your own?" She immediately protested though, causing Fane to sigh. However, he wasn't about to say "sod it" and leave her there, vulnerable. "Okay, you can hang on for a bit longer."

He continued to skate backwards, turning slowly to lead her into a wide and slow circle. "Look how good you are doing!" He commended. A little confidence had never hurt anyone and Merlin knew she needed some. "I'm going to let go now," He decided this time to not make it a question and just do it. His hands parted from hers, still extended in case she fell over and needed to be caught.

Odette found herself being parted from Fane. She was able to keep her balance just fine, but moving, well..that was another matter. She bit her lip a little and slid one foot up and then the other and continued to do that until she had moved a good few feet. She laughed a little. What had she been missing out on her entire life? She had always been afraid of water, but she could tell that it wasn't a bad thing...no...it was fun!

"Fane look! I'm doing it!" She said and as she slid gracefully across the ice. A nice big smile replaced her fearful eyes and the worry just melted away. She felt so happy, so light, so free...like she could do anything. She laughed a little bit and skated over to Fane. She realized, that once you got the hang of the initial sliding from left to right, the rest was a piece of cake. Once she reached Fane she tapped his shoulder and laughed. "Tag your it!" She said and skated as fast as she could, well, as fast as she could without falling down that is.

Ice skating was like walking, only cept slightly harder and required minimal skill in order to not look like a flailing idiot. He knew with a certain amount of encouragement and tutoring Odette would be able to do it and saw first hand his help earning a success.

"Yes! You are!" He replied, backing off even more
so she could skate and have fun on her own. He started to show off again, doing minimalist twirls on the ice. Suddenly he felt Odette tap him and a game of tag was initiated. "That's pretty bold of you to challenge me like that!" He replied and sped after her on the ice. He was gaining on her quickly, being that he was the more experienced skater, but a turn that she made was too sharp for him at his speed, and he fell on his bum and slide off course.

Once he stopped sliding out of control, Fane gathered himself back to his feet as fast as he could, still caught in the heat of competition. One step and there was a crack that was unnoticed. Another, and the ice was groaning and falling apart beneath him. He didn't have time to run, only to look up and meet Odette with a doomed look on his face before he fell feet first in the brisk water.

Fragments of light appeared through his vision and the baffled young boy struggled in the water. He swam up to the surface, but was caught beneath ice. Where was that break in the ice that he had entered through? He couldn't find it and instead banged uselessly with his fists against the frozen surface of the lake, hoping to break it. His efforts were in vain and he was only wasting energy and breath. Bubbles came out of his mouth and suddenly Fane found the irony in the situation. He told Odette that he would save her if he fell in and yet here he was about to drown himself when he fell in instead.

Odette was having a marvelous time playing this game with him. She found that for just starting skating that she was pretty good at avoiding Fane's touch. She laughed and looked back at the boy who was chasing her. "Can't catch me!!" She chimed and started to turn when she saw a look of terror wash over the young boys face. Her eyes widened a little. Little did she know, her greatest fear was about to come true for the boy who had offered to save if something were to go wrong.

One crack...then another and whoosh! Fane was gone from her sight and trapped under the ice. Odette's fear had come true right in front of her...but to someone else. "FANE!" She screamed and tried to run over finding herself slipping and falling on the ice. She scraped her knee harshly and cried out in pain, but it wasn't time for her to worry about her injury...Fane's life was on the line. She crawled to the hole and couldn't see him anywhere. She couldn't see any trance of him. "No...no no no no no no no!!" She said with worry. "Fane where are you?!" She was panicking. He was going to die...and it would be all of her fault.

However, just when she was beginning to loosing hope she heard a pounding against the bottom of the ice, moving towards the sound about three or four feet away she moved the frost off. The sight scared her...the bubbles were floating away from Fane's mouth. He was going to drown if she didn't hurry. She suddenly started to pound on the ice as hard as she could. One...two and three times. Nothing was working...She knew that he was close to death now... She quickly raised her elbow and threw it into the ice. A siring pain went threw her arm. She cried out in agony, but the ice was finally broken. Shaking off the pain momentarily, Odette started to tear the ice away reached into the water. She moved her good arm around until she felt another hand grab on to hers. Pulling with all of her strength, she brought the wet boy to the surface and pulled him onto the ice.

Black spots bloomed in his vision as he felt his chest collapsing in the water's pressure. He was starting to slowly fall away from the surface into the murky dark depths, but suddenly light broke through the iced over surface. A hand grabbed his and he was pulled upwards, his frozen limbs doing their best to help lift himself out of the water. He collapsed on the ice as soon as he emerged from the break in the ice. He coughed and gasped for air. "M-my..." He started and then hacked some more, spitting water out from his mouth. "My balls are freezing!" He exclaimed, as he shivered in his soaking robes.

He pulled off his gloves and jacket and then huddled closer to Odette, seeking her warmth. His head rested on her shoulder. "You're my guardian angel," He said and batted his eye lashes. "My hero!" He exclaimed, half out of breath, but yet managed a mimicking voice. He kissed her on the cheek before standing up then, his knees quivering in the cold. "I'm gonna die soon if we don't get back to the castle."

As soon as she brought him up from his downfall he was cracking jokes just like he normally did. She giggled a little bit at his initial reaction but then felt herself blushing as he came closer and but rolled her eyes at his comments of 'gratitude.' She sighed as looked at him. She felt herself freezing and nodded in agreement as he said they needed to get back. She felt his lips on her cheek and just as quickly as they came they were gone. She blushed a little. "Agreed..." She bit her lip and held her elbow and walked wobbly on her cut leg, but together they made it back, alive.
