Stand on Your Own Two Feet Empty Stand on Your Own Two Feet

Stephie was a little put out at the way her father insisted she learn to stand on her own too feet. That is, he insisted she do her own shopping. The pair of them had been told where to go to do shopping for the boarding school she would be attending and how to exchange their money but after that her father decided she needed to learn everything else for herself. She suspected Aunt Simone was behind that idea. She was always trying to push Stephanie out the house to join clubs or meet with friends. Dad always listened to Aunt Simone.

The eleven year old looked to the table where her father sat with their guide and she threw a pleading look in his direction but he ignored it. She sighed as she moved closer to the back of the pub where she was supposed to get out to some Alley called Amethyst Alley. Could she possibly find some other way to make her father come with her? She bit her lip and shook her head. What she needed was help and it wasn't coming from the direction of her parent. She reached out and tugged on the sleeve of a nearby person. "Um excuse me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, "could you help me please?"

Mabel was avoidimg her family, who were there to help her. But Mabel didn't want help, she could do things on her own. She slipped into the crowd of people, leaving her family behind. She was ready to do things on her own.

She was already over thisnplace and was bored. So, she went to order herself a butterbeer. She was stopped though by a girl about her age. Usually she would say a rude remark and walk away, but she was so terribly bored that she would talk to this girl.

"You need help?" Typical, Mabel thought. "Stick with me, kid. I'll show you what to do. Now first, I'm getting a butterbeer. Do you want one? I'm feeling nice today."

Stephanie nodded with some relief. This may not be what her father or aunt had in mind but she really did need help. The strange word coming out of the other girl's mouth reminded Stephie of just how many new things she'd learnt ever since that first visitor to her home. Was this anther thing she had to learn?

"Butterbeer?" she asked. "What is that?" It sounded like a very strange word indeed. "Well I guess so but I don't have the type of money I was told I'd need just yet." The thought of where she had to go to get her money exchanged terrified her.

There was many things that Mabel was going to have to teach the girl, first she'd have to teach her about butterbeer. "Its hard to explain, but I will buy you one so you. an try it. You don't have to pay me back, so don't worry aboutnthat. As for money, you'll get that soon enough."

She got them both butterbeers, she hamded one to the girl. "Normally I'm not so nice, so dony take this as an invitation to talk or approach me." Her words were harsh but she didn't care. "My family is purebloods so I know a thing or two about these wizarding things. So, I'm gonna help you because you seem to need it. Also, I'm Mabel. Mabel Miller."

Stephanie sniffed the drink Mabel had handed her cautiously before trying it. "That's nice," she remarked. "Almost tastes like..." She trailed off and tried some more before giving up on finding a comparison. "Well it's nice and thank you."

This meeting with a girl who must have been around her own age seemed to be going well until the warning. That terrified her. Was everyone going to be like this? Thankfully pureblood was a word Stephie had explained to her earlier. The bloodstatus thing sounded unfair but she'd already learnt two years ago that life wasn't fair so she was not going to complain about something like this. "I'm Stephanie Henrau," she said in response. "But my fr... most people just call me Stephie." That was close. She'd nearly forgotten Mabel wasn't looking for friends. She was just being nice for this one time.

Mabel played with the end of her braid as she talked. "Well, Stephanie, what would you like to know?" No way was she going to call the girl by her nickname, she might think they were friends. Obviously she wanted to know about the wizarding world, but Mabel wasn't going to overwhelm the girl by saying things all at once.

Mabel took a sip of her butterbeer then sat it down on a nearby table, which wasn't be used. "Ask whatever you want." She looked at the girl, she knew that the girl must have been a little freaked out about what Mabel said.

Stephie opened her mouth to reply and then closed it again. What did she want to know? So many confusing things which she'd been told and so many unanswered questions that she wasn't sure where to begin. "Well um..." Stephanie ran her fingers down the glass bottle of the butterbeer. "...what other drinks and foods are there which are different?"

What she really wanted to ask was where the exit was but Stephanie didn't want to be rude. Not after Mabel who apparently wasn't usually friendly had been so kind. It did make Stephanie wonder though if there was anyone who was genuinely nice at this school. She hoped so. Otherwise things would be worse at a boarding school than back home.

This girl could have asked any question in the world and she chose to ask about the different foods and drinks in the wizarding world. Mabel gave this girl a weird look, was this girl stupid or something? Mabel could answer whatever question the girl threw at her, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to waste her time on such a stupid question.

"That's such a stupid question." Mabel had also had a hard time shutting her mouth so she usually said what came to mind even if the words were mean. "You could ask any question and you ask such a stupid question."

Stephanie winced at Mabel's words. She really was mean just like she warned. "I was taught there's no such thing as a stupid question," the girl stubbornly replied. "You have butterbeer which I've never heard of so there must be other things which are different from normal." There she'd done it. Stood up for herself like Marie said she should. Maybe if everyone did turn out to be like Mabel she could survive.

The girl pushed her unfinished butterbeer away from herself and stood. "Thank you for the drink but I have to get going now. If you thought my other question was stupid then maybe you'd prefer it if I asked you to show me how to get out of here." She was not going to break down in front of this girl. There were worse things out there than what she said. Much worse things.

"I beg to differ, there is a such thing as stupid questions. Stupid questions come from stupid people. And you, my dear, must be stupid for asking such a stupid question." This stuff was normal to Mabel and she didn't really care if the girl thought this stuff was strange. "What is different to you is normal for me."

Mabel gave the girl a smirk and then got up. "I'll show you how to get out. Follow me." Mabel wasted no time walking towards the exit. "Okay, so this is how you get out." She began to explain how to get out of the pub and how to get to Whisper Alley instead of the alley the girl was supposed to go to. "I hope that you have a great time shopping. See you at school." She gave the girl a sweet smile then walked away to go finish her drink.

Stephanie's temper flared and she hit the table with her hands. "You're stupid for being stupid about people not knowing things they could never have known," she blurted out quickly and loudly whilst shaking her now sore hands. The girl blushed as she realised she'd drawn attention to herself. Her family had always warned her about her quick temper but Stephanie wasn't about to apologise to someone being so cruel about her lack of knowledge.

She poked her tongue out at Mabel's retreating back before returning to the entry way she'd been brought to. The girl exited the pub and hoped she would be able to avoid the other girl during her time at Beauxbatons. Stephie squealed when she felt a hand touch her shoulder but visibly relaxed when a nice lady pointed her in the right direction with a warning that the other Alley was not a recommended place for children. Had Mabel deliberately tried to point her in the wrong direction on top of calling her and her question stupid? Well she would never ask the girl because that'd mean she'd fail to avoid her.
