Lost Empty Lost

Francis had walked the streets of Paris many times, yet she had never known of the little door that lead to a pub, where wizards and witches would go to. She was told that by going through the pun, she would find herself on streets that sold magic gear and ware that she was required to have for school. This was all baffling to Frankie. The fact that all of this existed always and that she just never knew.

She had to admit she was having trouble abandoning the stereotypes she learned from fairy tales about witches and wizards. She half expected to be served stew with eye balls floating in it by a warty faced old witch. Instead she had warm chowder that was splendidly crafted and the witch looked like any human she had seen.

Taking a seat on a high stool, the confused young witch held her chowder close as she sipped it gently. Her eyes scanned the room, trying to spot the door that would lead her to yet another wonder. However, she couldn't find it. That was none the matter, though, as she was content eating in peace first and then going for shopping. "I wonder if the warts come with age..." She muttered aloud to herself, once again questioning the appearance of real witches. "Maybe the more spells you know, the more warts you have." She reasoned. "And for males, it's the beard that shows the magical status."

Many words could describe Galen, smart, talented, shy, quiet, but subtle was not one of them. He had a sense of balance that resembled a bull in a china shop. He was a mess of less than agile movements. This was no different. It was simple, just sit in a stool and order lunch. However, his lack of grace had other ideas, in an attempt to climb onto the stool, he slipped and fell on the ground. His cheeks went a bright shade or red. It was so embarrassing. He knew people had seen him fall, but he hoped no one would mention it as he climbed up onto the chair next to a girl who appeared to be about his age. The only other person his age he'd met had turned out to be really mean. Hopefully this girl was nicer, maybe she could be his first friend, that'd be so cool if she was. Maybe she'd let him draw her, he'd not been able to find someone willing to let him yet. Galen decided he'd better make conversation first. He cleared his throat. "H-Hi." He started shyly. "I'm Galen. A-Are you a first year too? Sorry if I'm bothering you." He added quickly.

Frankie had been discussing her curiosities with her chowder and therefore didn't notice that she had company. She raised her chocolate eyes from the surface of her chowder and looked at the stuttering boy besides her. She had been so lost in her own thoughts that she hadn't comprehended a word of what the boy said to her.

"Do you think that you're going to have a long beard once you learn lots and lots of spells?" She inquired, for research, of course. She then quickly extended her hand to shake. "Frankie" she introduced. "That's what they tell me."

Galen's head tilted slightly. That was an unexpected reaction. Her question was even more curious, but then he realized she was either a muggleborn or raised by muggles, so he just smiled amusedly. "I don't plan on growing any facial hair." He decided. "I think beards look silly." He took her hand and shook. "It's a pleasure to meet you Frankie." He grinned. This girl was different, but nice, and nice was all that mattered to Galen. After a moment he let her hand go. "I like to draw. It's my favorite thing to do in the world, what's yours?" It was a vague question but one that could teach you a lot about a person.

Frankie thought about the boy's reaction for a moment. It appeared that growing a beard was a choice, just like for any non-magical man, and was only based on the fact of whether or not one decided to shave. "Interesting," she replied and then nodded in agreement. "Yes I suppose a beard on an eleven year old would fall under the category of silly," She replied and tossed a few crackers into her chowder. She pushed them down into the hot liquid to let them absorb and became soft before picking them up and eating them.

"Interesting. I'd like to see some of your drawings sometime," She replied, chewing on some of the chowder saturated crackers. "If you don't mind, that is." She knew how sometimes artists got a bit weird with showing off their art. But then again, most artists she knew drew perfectly well and yet still claimed they didn't know how to draw. Such weird beings, artists. She shrugged when he asked her what she liked. "Lots of things...though I wouldn't say I have any really amazing talents."

"It probably would indeed look silly." Galen chuckled softly. "Y-You'd want to see my drawings?" He smiled. "That'd be awesome." He said as he watched her drown the crackers in her chowder. His eyebrows raised when she said she had a lack of talents. "Of course you have talents, you just might not know what they are yet. You'd probably make a good quidditch chaser. Though sports aren't very interesting to me." He shrugged. "But saying you have no talents is impossible, everyone is talented in their own unique ways. It's just how the world works." Galen smiled brightly at Frankie.

Frankie smiled appreciatively at the boy as he agreed to show her some pictures. She supposed this made them friends or acquaintances or something at least, but she was happy to know that she had a reason to see someone again. She was going to a new school where it was almost certain that no one she knew would be attending with her and she couldn't help but feel a bit scared.

"Quidditch...chaser?" She repeated with a raised eyebrow. She had never heard of such a thing. "What's that?" By what he said next, she deduced it was some sort of sport. She wondered what made it different from all the muggle sports she tried in her muggle school, none of them really suiting her taste.

"You fly on a broom and catch these big red spheres that you then throw threw hoops, past a keeper, which is kind of like a goalie." Galen added before smiling. He'd deduced that this made them friends, and so, he pulled out his sketch pad. "Flip through it, if you'd like." He said softly. And then wondered if she considered them friends. Going to a new school certainly was scary, but for someone with no knowledge of magic? He couldn't even imagine how tough that must be. Which brought him back to his question, were he and Frankie now friends? Was it weird to ask? He bit the corner of his lip. "Will you be friends with me?"

Frankie tried to picture it in her head. So the balls were red and they passed them along and threw them into hoops? "I think that's called basketball." She saw a few games on television once, but it was nothing special. Actually, she believed the ball used in the game was of a more orange shade, but she wasn't going to argue with an artist.

She picked up the bowl in her hand and sipped the remainder of the broth from the rim. When she returned the bowl to the table, she saw a sketchbook before her. She pushed aside the empty bowl and brought the sketchbook before her. She was flipping through it, looking through the sketches of various objects and creatures when he asked her a rather odd question that she had never heard before. An eyebrow rose and she smirked. "I thought the answer was obvious."

Galen just tilted his head. "What on all of Merlin's Earth is basketball?" He'd never heard such a silly term before. "Is it obvious as in yes, or obvious as in this Galen kid is a weirdo who's bugging me? I hope it's the first. I really don't have any friends besides my little sister." He admitted, shocked he'd given up that information so freely. Was it a good thing or a bad thing he trusted this girl he'd barely known for an hour? Still if they were going to be friends he was probably going to talk about even more embarrassing stuff, like the muggle boy who used to beat him up. Maybe she thought he was a loser now? Maybe she already had thought that.

Frankie almost laughed at the boy's outburst of words. What was he even saying? "Woah, 'Merlin's Earth'?" She laughed again at the absurdity of it all. "I've heard of Merlin, but do you magic people honestly think of him as some sort of god?" It was the only thing Frankie could think of comparing it to, since most people she was around, when they were alarmed, dropped a 'Oh god' and things of the like. Wizards were weird and now she was considered one.

"Basketball is this sport, and forgive me, I am only vaguely aware of how it works, in which you have a orange, or have you, red, ball and people pass it around and shoot it into a hoop," Frankie explained and took a sip of her drink. Pumpkin flavored juice. Strange. "So basically what you said, right?" She reasoned.

Frankie wasn't sure exactly of what she thought of the boy. He wasn't mean or annoying, but she only knew him for just a little while, and that was no time for judgement of character. "Oh trust me, if I hated you, you would know," Frankie decided to respond, and it was true. She had little patience for annoying people and had no problem telling them to go away. "So I guess I just don't hate you?" She said, less confidently. "Is that fair enough?"
