Cure for the Common Cold

Post by Guest on Mon Jul 29, 2013 6:01 pm

Wizards had a cure for the common cold. They had a cure for the common cold. Those words were echoing in Marie-Laure's head as she made her way up to the infirmary on the fifth floor. The professor who ordered her hadn't actually in words that there was a cure but she assumed that must be the case if she was being sent up to see the mediwitch about her cough. Mediwitch. That was yet another odd term she had yet to get used to in this world of magic.

The first year coughed again as she entered the infirmary. "Hello?" she called out, her voice echoing through the empty room. The beds were empty and the mediwitch was not in sight. Marie-Laure stepped back again with a sigh. So much for receiving a cure for her cold. Now what did she do? If she went back down coughing the professor would berate her for not following orders. She bit her lip and considered her options. She could stay here and hope someone turned up or she could go looking for the person she was supposed to see. The first made much more sense. Maybe they'd gone into the mystery staffroom for a break. There were, afterall, no patients in the beds.

Marie-Laure sat down on the end of one of those beds and folded her hands neatly into her lap. There shouldn't be too long a wait. She lifted her hands to muffle the next cough which came out of her mouth. Hopefully it wouldn't be much longer.

Caleb never thought you could have too much candy, but he was wrong. So wrong. He groaned, grabbing his stomach, maybe it was a bad idea to eat that fizzy candy after eating the other candies he had. He felt like his stomach was going to explode or maybe he was just exaggerating a bit. He was told to go straight to the infirmary after he had started complaining. He shouldn't have been eating candy in class, he was scolded for that.

He slowly made his way to his destination, still clutching his stomach. The infirmary was empty besides the girl he had met in the book shop. "Hi..." he wasn't in his usual cheery mood and that showed. He groaned again, his face began to sweat. Before he knew it, his head was in the trash can and he was puking up the contents in his stomach. Once he was done, he started to feel a little better. His stomach was still hurting, but not as much. A little rest would make him feel much better. "Too much candy," he explained, which came out as more of a groan. "What are you here for?" He could tell that she was probably sick, but decided to ask anyways.

She sat up straighter, a little hopeful that the footsteps she heard signalled the return of the mediwitch. The first year slumped again when she saw it was only Caleb. Another cough prevented her from replying to his question straight away. Stupid cold was getting worse and still it looked like the cure was further away than she thought when first sent up here.

When she had sufficiently recovered from her coughing fit she focused her eyes on him. "So in your case it's self-inflicted," she remarked tactlessly. "I've got a cold. Wizards are given potions aren't they? Do they taste as bad as cough medicine?" She hadn't actually given much thought to the taste when she'd been sent to the infirmary. Now that she was waiting it was plaguing her mind. The ingridents which had been placed in the potions she'd learnt to brew so far suggestion to her it would taste worse than normal cough medicine.

Caleb's stomach was still aching but he felt bad for his friend. It wasn't her fault she was here but it was his fault that he was there. "I hope you feel better soon." He wasn't sure about what she would be given. "I don't know. Do you need me to get you anything?" He didn't want to see her suffer from this cold. "It might taste bad, but it'll make you feel better." He gave he a hopeful smile. "You'll get better soon."

Caleb sat down in a chair beside her. His stomach was still hurting and he couldn't stand anymore. "I need to cut down on my candy." It was better said than done. It would kill him to cut back on his candy. But he didn't want to come back here tbecause he had eaten too much. "It was a bad choice to eat so much."

Caleb was a real puzzle to the muggleborn girl. Why wouldn't he know if it tasted as bad as cough medicine. Then something occurred to her. First she shook her head. "I'll just wait until the nurse comes. Have you ever tasted cough medicine?" If she'd never had a potion then it stood to reason that it was likely a lot of students had never tasted the normal types of medicines. She coughed again. "I hope you're right," she eventually said.

"I told you that before in the bookshop," she reminded him. That time though it wasn't anything to do with getting sick but concentration. "Have it as a reward instead. Every time you do well in class you eat a piece of candy." If her guess was correct that would either greatly curtail his intake of anything sugary or help him to perform better in class.

It seemed that Caleb confused the girl with his statement about not knowing if cough medicine tasted as bad as a potion. It was true that he had never had cough medicine before, even his brother hadn't. Maybe it was because potions were quicker and worked better. "Potions work fast, that's why I was always given them. They work on just about everything." Colds, broken bones, you name it. "This one time I fell and broke my arm and my mom gave me something that helped my bone grow back so it wasn't broken anymore."

He should have listened to her, she was wise. "I will cut down on my candy because I never want a stomachache like this ever again." And he meant it.
