Death Amongst the Living Empty Death Amongst the Living

Linette would never admit it but she really missed her sister's shadow. The younger girl had always annoyed her with her chatter and her insistence that she come to Beauxbatons. Now Linette wished with all her heart she could take back some of the things she'd said that day on the beach. Why had she been so mean? Linette hadn't been that way with anyone else.

She sighed and walked into the cemetery. There was a place which matched her current mood. It was dull and dreary just like herself. That was until she realised that cemeteries had something which she hadn't given much thought to. They had history and that history consisted of words on gravestones. A small smile came over her face as she bent down toward one gravestone and read the eroding words. The smile faded a little as she paused to calculate the age. They'd only been a couple of years or so older than herself. Barely graduated from Beauxbatons. Linette shuddered at the thought of just reaching the age when she could legally cast magic no matter where she was and losing her life. "So young," she mused aloud. "Isn't it sad when you read of how young someone was when they died?"

Death Amongst the Living Empty Re: Death Amongst the Living

Persephone was always on the lookout for something new. With the addition of Care of Magical Creatures class to her school schedule came an assortment of new adventure ideas for her. She loved learning about the odd creatures and wanted to meet more than just the creatures that were brought in for class purpose. She was convinced that maybe she'd happen along one or two of them sometime when she was out in the world but it wasn't until that day that she found something suspicious.

Call her crazy, but Persephone was convinced that she had seen a crumpled horn snorkack. Okay, maybe not a mature and tall one, but a tiny miniature sized one and it ran right into the cemetery. She knew that Professor St. Pierre was wrong when he questioned her belief in the existence of them.

She initially ran into the cemetery, but then moved to a crawl, as she gained up on the spot where it was hiding. She pulled the leaves of the bush aside only to find a pigeon in the bush. She heaved a sigh and sat on the grass for a moment before hearing a voice speak to her. Or maybe not to her. She wasn't sure, but listened anyway.

"I never really read the dates before," Percy said, coming out of her hiding place and pulling leaves from her hair. "Actually, I never really come here. It's too creepy and I think the stories about the ghost here are all made up. I've never seen him," She added, a bit crestfallen.

Linette gave the other girl a look of disbelief. "You've never read the dates? But the dates tell part of the story of a person's life. Maybe not how they lived their life or what happened in it but it does tell you how long they lived it." Her eyes refocused on another tombstone with only one date. "Now that's sadder. No idea how old they were. Just a name and the date they died. I wonder if the family was poorer and couldn't afford anything more than that." There were so many possiblities to be read in these tombstones and Linette could feel ideas for an article already brewing in her mind.

She shrugged. "I don't think it's made up. He's around here somewhere. Maybe he's one of those ghosts who only comes out at night." She stood and looked around the cemetery. Where was that tomb? "Anyway I've heard he's shy so he might not come out if he thinks someone is scary. I wonder if he thinks we're scary." She laughed at that thought. The mere idea that two schoolgirls might appear scary to a ghost was funny from where she was standing.

Death Amongst the Living Empty Re: Death Amongst the Living

Persephone offered a shrug. She didn't mean anything by it, certainly not thinking any less of the value of the departed souls, she just never was interested or curious enough to read past the names on the tombstones and read the dates. Her hype of exploration that she felt before was slightly dampened by the older girl's views.

Percy laughed at the notion that she was scary. She was awfully decorated with her growing collection of piercings and trinkets, but she wasn't as wild as she looked. Plus, she always wore a smile. She didn't find the older girl to be scary, either. Percy knew from watching Quidditch games that she was pretty loquacious and had a sense of humor, but she never gave Percy any reason to fear her. "I doubt that," She said, loudly and confidently. But maybe it was because they were both too loud. "Maybe!" She started, yelling at first, but then quickly hushed her voice. "Maybe if we talked quieter, he wouldn't be scared and he'd come out and play with us." She whispered.

Linette placed a finger to her lips and nodded. "Perhaps." She looked around in the hope she would catch a glimpse of this ghost but so far nothing. It was a little disappointing and she went back to reading tombstones. "Oooh. He had a long life and a long family." She pointed to another tombstone. A rather large imposing one with a list of people this obviously rich wizard had left behind. She realised belatedly just how loud her voice had been. "Sorry. I might have scared him off again."

The fifth year stood and moved down to another very small grave. "I think this one must have been a child." She crouched down and nodded. "It was." It was a rather sad looking one, almost crumbling away so that you could only see the dates and the age. The name had almost eroded away completely. "I wonder why there's no preservation charm of some sort to stop this happening."

Death Amongst the Living Empty Re: Death Amongst the Living

Since Percy had failed to see a real crumpled horn snorkack on that day, she figured that being there in the cemetery was the perfect excuse to try and scope out the ghost again. Maybe this time she would have better luck? It was seeming that perhaps that wouldn't be the case, seeing as how both her and the older girl failed to be able to keep their voices down.

Percy looked at the distinctly larger tombstone and nodded in agreement when she saw the long list of names. She had never considered the worth of one's life to be imprinted in stone but she supposed that with a tomstone that large, it would only make sense that the man resting six feet under it had money to burn when his time had come. She was still admiring the tombstone when Linette found yet another note worthy story; the tombstone of a child.

Percy crept up behind her to get a better look and frowned. The child was younger than she was at the time of their passing, which made Persephone sad. They never got the chance to experience as much of life as she did.

She determined that Linette spent an awful lot of time thinking about the smaller things, as the girl pointed out the tragedy that was the wiping away message that was carved out for the departed soul. "Surely at the time they didn't consider weather to be as important as helping the dead move on." Percy then sat down in the grass. "If a soul isn't at peace, they become a ghost, so people have to do ceremonial stuff to help them carry on. Did you know the Romans believed that in order for a soul to go to the underworld, they had to pay the boatman on the river Styx two coins to ferry them across?" She sort of rocked a bit in place. "True story."
