An Imperial Affliction Empty An Imperial Affliction

Aurora had not heard from her fathers for about a month now. She knew that they were busy and wouldn't have time to write all the time. She knew that they missed her and she missed them dearly. She'd gotten into the habit of checking the Owerly every few days just in case one of their letters did arrive. Today one had, but it wasn't the normal happy and curious questions and statements, but this one was not of that nature.

"Dear Rory,

We really miss you sweetie, and hope you're doing well. However, we have some bad news...Penny has fallen a bit sick with a foal. We wanted to surprise you with the news of the baby, but when she got sick, we became worried. We're keeping her under careful watch and we had Doctor Nusebam take a look at her, and he wants us to keep her in warm conditions and feed her well. We'll keep you updated and are keeping you in our thoughts.

We love you, Aurora.

Your Dad & Kale"

She bit her lip and started to pace back and forth, Penny was sick and she was pregnant with a foal, She was both excited and scared. "Come on, Penny girl." She whispered in a small attempt of a prayer. "You're going to make it through this, I just know you will."

Bo felt like he had just walked into something private. After all, Rory was speaking aloud to an empty room and it sounded pretty personal. He felt as if he should turn around and leave but he really had to send the letter he had now before it was too late, so he quietly entered the Owlrey and shut the door without a noise behind him. He just needed to be in and out and was sure he could do it without disrupting her.

However, as he headed towards one of the school's owls to borrow, he noticed she was looking right at him. To ignore her entirely would be rude, so he offered a small smile and greeted her. "Hello Rory. How are you?" He spoke before turning towards the owl and attaching the letter to it's leg before sending it off to the sky.

Aurora hadn't noticed when Bo had walked in, but once she turned on her heel, she saw him. She sopped for a moment and stared at him and bit her lip. He finally noticed her and asked how she was. Sighing she looked down and sighed. "I've been better..." She whispered and tried to return the nice smile. "I just received a letter from my father...he's fine...but.." She broke off and brought her arms across her chest nervously. "It's Penny.." Rory said softly. "She's sick with a foal..." She bit her lip. "I'm really scared Bo..." She took a breath. "She's never been sick like this before, it sounds really bad, I'm worried she's not going to make it." Running a hand through her hair and sighed. "I'm sorry...how are you?"

Beauregard bit his lip as Rory started to tell him about the letter she had just received from her father. The way she spoke made it clear that whatever was in the letter was not happy news and he soon learned of what nature it was of. Bo didn't know too much about horses and didn't entirely understand what Penny's affliction was, but at least knew it meant that the horse was sick.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Rory," Bo relayed, tugging at the sleeves of his uniform, not sure how else to address the news. "I know it must seem scary to you to be so far away from Penny while all of this is going on. But you must think positively. The letter came from America and is pretty far away. Maybe in the time in took for the letter to get here, Penny has gotten better and your father has yet to send the letter with the good news." Beauregard offered. It was awfully optimistic of him, but he'd rather not Rory started to cry in front of him. He hardly knew what to do that one time Riley teared up on him. He'd be entirely lost if Rory did.

Aurora shivered and hugged her arms close to her chest. She didn't know how to react to everything. She couldn't bear it if she'd lost her. Penny was her best friend. When she was sad, the sweet horse was always there for her. Penny was irreplaceable and there was no other friendship like theirs. The girl listened as Bo tried to make her feel better by telling her that the letter was just old and and that maybe Penny was better, but she knew better than that. It was a selfish world and if the world wanted something, it would take it. It didn't matter if the person, thing, or animal was close to someone, it would be taken away from them in an instant without any love or remorse.

Aurora sighed and then smiled sadly, but still smiled at Bo. He was considerate and sweet. He didn't seem very comfortable with emotions, but she wasn't about to cry in front of him. It wasn't his problem to begin with, but she was thankful for his support. "Thank you..you don't know how much that means to me." She said softly and then looked down. "Um...what are you here for, besides sending a letter, I mean." She said quickly and looked down, concealing her feelings.

Rory didn't seem entirely convinced, but he liked to believe that his words somehow eased her stress a bit. She did change topics after that, which might've been a good sign, but Bo could never be sure with other people. He looked towards the open window where the owl had flown out of, carrying his letter and then back at Rory. "Ummm, just sending a letter, really." He answered. He couldn't imagine many people coming to the owlrey for other reasons. It wasn't the most glamorous of places. "I wanted to ask my, uhhh, parents," the word still felt weird on his tongue. "If I could have a friend visit during summer break," He relayed before his eyes dropped back down to the owl pellet infested floor. He kicked one before speaking again. "Maybe you should like do something to take your mind off of things," he suggested. She still seemed pretty down. He didn't blame her. "Worrying about it isn't going to make Penny any better. It will only make you sick." He was sounding like his adoptive mother, and it never made him feel any better, but he felt he had to say something.

Aurora didn't know what else to say regarding Penny and listened to his reason for being in the owlery. Delivering a letter. Yeah. Dumb question. She thought, and silently kicked herself. "Oh! That'll be fun, maybe I'll do that too. Good idea." She smiled small and looked down to the ground. Although she was trying hard not to show her worry for her dear friend, the expression still found it's way onto her face.

Bo mentioned trying to find something to occupy her time or mind, maybe he was right. "Would you maybe want to take a walk with me then?" She asked in suggestion to his idea of doing something to get her mind off of things. "I mean, you don't have to if you don't want to, but maybe we could catch up?" She said with a small smile.

Bo forced a smile in return to Aurora's forced smile. He knew she was faking her smile then. She just received some really tough news and it would take more than five minutes for her to get over it if ever. He nodded as she said she invite someone over for summer holiday as well, though he wasn't entirely sure how easy it would be for someone from this school to visit all the way in America. He wasn't about to burst her bubble though. How could he?

"You sure I won't be too much of a bore?" Bo replied as Aurora asked for him to walk with her. He was all finished in the Owlrey and didn't have anything better to do, so he'd might as well.

Aurora nodded at Bo as he replied. He wasn't a bore, he was one of the better friends that the girl had had. He was a bit of a wallflower, but that is what made him special. He saw things that others didn't and knew that peoples mattered and that even though someone may appear happy on the outside, it wasn't always the case. Emotion was a tough thing to dechiper, but Bo seemed to have the skill down. Maybe not handling it, but understanding.

"Of course not Bo, you're not a bore." She said and gave the boy a small smile. "Besides we need to catch up." She said and smiled a little bit bigger. The longer the conversation went on, the better she felt. "I appreciate it though." She said softly and looked up at Bo. "Really."
