I Believe in You

Post by Anthony Hayes on Wed Feb 10, 2016 1:22 am

Anthony was convinced that there were two types of shoppers: Little babies who carried a basket, and smart people who brought their little brother to help them carry everything they needed. Of course, Anthony had carried the books that his youngest brother couldn't carry, but not many. Luckily, he knew the shopkeeper would let them sit their things behind the counter so it wouldn't get stolen while they shopped.

Tony walked around, his little brother trailing behind him. "Reese, hold this," he said, handing him some broomstick handle polish. "And... This," he said again, handing him some gloves. He knew he'd get some for the winter season, but he preferred his own. That way, he knew exactly who was sweating in them.

He walked some more and picked up some device that he didn't recognize. "Hmm... Any idea what this is?" he asked, doubting Reese would know the answer. Then, he decided to just spit out what was on his mind. "Look. I know quidditch isn't your favorite. It isn't mine anymore either. But it would make Dad really happy if you tried out. You can even do a crappy job, if you want. Jakob and I will lie for you. Well, I'll make sure he does. You know how Jakob is," he pointed out. "Not that I think you couldn't be a quidditch player. If eleven-year-old girls can do it, anyone can."

Anthony knew that Jakob was most likely to try to get Reese in trouble and it was always annoying to him. Jakob could grow up anytime now. But Tony knew he did similar things to Jake when he was his age, so what did he really expect?

Reese didn't like quidditch. Actually, "didn't like" wasn't the right way to put it. He depised quidditch. It was all his father ever talked about and he knew that he wanted all of his sons to play. But Reese just wasn't that into it, he didn't want to do it. But it seemed like it was still shoved into his face even though he made it quite clear that he wanted nothing to do with the sport. He wasn't athlete, he was a clumsy and awkward boy. He didn't want to have anything to do with the sport but his father insisted.

No matter what, he was reminded of the sport. It was all his father ever talked about and it seemed like his brothers were the same. The young boy let out a loud sigh as he followed his brother around the quidditch shop. He didn't want to be that and that was probably obvious, he much rather be doing anything else. Like shopping for robes or stepping on glass, though he rather shop for robes than step on glass. Of course he was in charge of holding the things that his brother picked out. As the youngest he was pushed around and told to do things, he was always being used in some way.

He gave his brother a look as if to say "do you really think I would know what that thing was". Honestly, it was like they didn't even know him. "I'm not trying out," he said firmly. There was no way he would ever be caught at tryouts. He didn't care if it would make his father happy, he wouldn't be happy playing quidditch. "I don't care if Jakob tells Dad." That was a lie and they both knew it, but he really didn't want to try out and he really didn't want anyone to make him.

Anthony chuckled at his brother's expression. Reese was kind of a funny kid, in an awkward way. He put the object back down carefully and turned back to the wall of items. "I understand the feeling, Reese. And I respect you decision, I really do. But trust me, I know from experience that Dad's disapproval is a lot worse than a little bit of quidditch. I'd consider it a little more. I'd hate to see you go through the same thing I did."

"I'm almost done, kid, I promise," he said, knowing his brother was probably really bored. Anthony picked up another item from the shelf, then put it back. "You know I have your back, right?" he asked, walking toward the counter. "I know you're worried and nervous, but if you need something, I'll help if I can. You're gonna make all new friends and you're gonna do great. Do you have questions or anything?"

Couldn't they just lie and say he had tried out and didn't make the team? He knew he wasn't going to make the team so there was no use in trying. He already knew that his father was disappointed in him, he wasn't into the sport that he loved so much. He was nothing like his father and brothers, quidditch wasn't something he would ever be interested in. "He already knows I don't like quidditch," Reese stated. "I already know I disappoint him." So why disappoint him more and fail to get on the quidditch team? He wasn't even going to try.

Reese nodded along to whatever his brother was talking about, he had stopped paying attention because he knew that this conversation was continue to be about quidditch. "I'm not nervous," Reese lied. "There's nothing to be nervous about, everyone else has done it and now its my turn." The boy shook his head when asked if he had any questions, he didn't have any but he also wanted it to look like he knew what he was doing.

Anthony listened, but said nothing as he paid for his things and retrieved their stash of supplies. "Whatever you say, Reese. If you need help in flying class, make sure you come find me," the quidditch captain replied. "If you get sorted into a house other than Nuage or Cerisier, don't go to Valdez for lessons. She's a bit... Abrasive."

He'd seen Ursula get fierce on the pitch. He didn't know how well she'd take care of his brother if he got hurt. Maybe it would be a good thing for him to not play quidditch after all. "Alright. Here's what we're going to do. You're going to pray that you get into Montagnard or Feu. I will tell Dad that I think their captain is crappy and I recommended you to not bother. That way, if anything, the wrath comes down on me, okay?" he stated. Reese was going to have to be okay with that because he had no excuses if he didn't.

Anthony wasn't convinced, but he wouldn't challenge it. "If you have any, let me know," he said, walking to the door. "The next two stores are all about you. Robes first, then wand. Then I'll give you some extra money so you can eat at the pub. Cool?"

Reese listened to his older brother talk about someone he didn't know or want to get to know. He wanted nothing to do with quidditch and he didn't want to fly either. But flying couldn't be avoided, that was something he was going to have to deal with. He hoped that he got into the houses that Anthony mentioned, he didn't want to try out for the quidditch team. Even if he got into the other houses, he wasn't going to try out. He wasn't going to do it and nothing would change his mind. "I'm not trying out," he stated again. He felt like he had said this a million times already. "Dad knows I don't like the sport so he shouldn't expect me to try out." He was already a disappointment and why not further the disappointment? "He'll get over it."

Reese was a tiny little thing and he doubted he would get much taller. Maybe he could go without getting fitted again. "I guess that's okay," the young boy shrugged.
