Alone Empty Alone

Kat had never been one for going home over the holidays. She had good friends and a life here, and returning home reminded her that without her life here she was terribly lonely. Her two older brothers went to a muggle boarding school year-round and didn't get off for holiday until next week. With her parents at work and her younger brother staying over at a friend's house for a sleepover, Kat had the entire house to herself.

The smell of fresh paint wafted through the cold window, mixing with the less pungent odor of pine from the trees outside. Flakes of snow drifted in and out of the crevice, and Kat smiled at them, giggling when they landed on her nose. Music blared from speakers behind her, mixture of classical to get her into a creative mood, and rock to keep her awake. The girl danced around in her pajamas as she stroked paint across an empty canvas, unable to keep still. She sang along to all the songs with actual lyrics, as loudly as she could caterwaul without sounding like she was dying.

Well, at least being alone had perks.

It was the second day that Kat had been left alone at the house, and she was starting to get bored. There were only so many things she could paint or draw while she was away, and she certainly wasn't going to look over any of the materials for the classes she was taking the next term. She had sent letters or little postcards to her friends to wish them all happy holidays, priding herself on drawing a design for each one of them. Her parents and brothers were out for the day but they weren't doing anything interesting. Tired of seeing the same old scenery, left her room and went to venture outside.
She rushed back in immediately to get a coat and warmer shoes, as little snowflakes were raining from the sly like confetti. She thought this was definitely better than sitting around inside, and made her way down the street, the gentle flakes landing and dampening her red hair.

The third day that Kat was left alone, Kat was climbing the walls. Quite literally. She was ascending a set of stairs to her house's attic.

She entered the dark room and looked around with interest. She had never been up here before, and she was starting to wonder why she hadn't thought of this sooner. The space was enormous and most importantly empty. No one but rats or maybe a raccoon had been up here, although judging by the smell all of them had either died up here, or a passing cat had had its babies in here some time ago and they'd also had babies before moving on to the next house. Apart from the smell, if Kat got past the dust and initial grime the space was full of potential. Empty white walls and the curved window that she had seen so many times before but never realized was in the attic until now that let the sun shone through. She tried to ignore the dust the the light made visible, like a freckles cloud. She sneezed, the sight inadvertently affecting her.

Brushing her curly red hair our of her eyes, she stared at the room and tried to imagine the possibilities. With a squeal, she rushed downstairs to get pain and some of the framed drawings she'd done. She would make this room her own private art studio, and her family would never even know.

It would take a few days, and she would have to work when no one else was there, but she could do it!

The fourth day of Kat's vacation involved three things: polka-dots, kittens, and an ice-maze.

The polka-dots were from the paint style she had decided to use. She had wasted no time running to the store as soon as she woke up the next morning, and getting the brightest colors she could find. As a result, pastel pink and eggshell blue were slathered all over the walls. Originally she had intended for two walls to be pink and two to be blue, but that was off the table due to the next thing: kittens.

Cats were certainly the bubbly girl's favorite thing, seeing as they shared the same name as she did minus a letter. The girl was also a big softie, so when she heard a cat and her kittens mewling outside in the winter chill, she couldn't help but coo and rush out to meet them, lulling them inside with soft pets and smiles. She got turkey and milk out for all of them and brought them to the studio, but this was a bad idea.

One of the kittens leapt into the paint holder, and the other kitten squealed and followed it, creating cotton-candy colored paw-prints on the floor. Inspiration struck the young artist and she frantically repainted all of the pink walls blue, and added pink polka-dots on all of them.

Finally, the ice maze.

Kat had been caught having the cats later in the day, and was forced to move them out of the new art studio (luckily they now knew about her art studio and she could work longer hours).

While searching for a new place to keep the poor scraps of fur, though, she had made her way through the frozen forest and found herself lost. She wandered around aimlessly for hours, before placing the cats in wrapped blankets in a covered clearing. She raced back through the woods, and by a miracle ended up back at home.

Shivering, she ate dinner with her family and went to bed.

She wasn't surprised when she woke up to the sound of purrs, the mother cat and kittens getting back into her room, now laid against her bent knee.

On the fifth day Kat had to let the attic air put from all of the paint fumes, so she had the day to herself to do absolutely nothing. Her favorite~!

But the longer she laid around watching shows she was too busy to watch during the semester, the more she thought about things she had to do for school.

Like getting her new textbooks.
Or doing the winter homework foe her classes (as if).
Or how she was going to have money to buy paint supplies and cat food without a job.

The longer she thought about these things, the more stressed she became, entering a manic state as she ran around the house, trying to do other less productive things to keep herself from thinking about the things she really had to do.

Her laundry was done, the dishes in the sink were rinsed and put in the dishwasher... hell, she even vacuumed! And she hated that job! Anything to stop her from becoming so bored she would actually do school work.

She played video games, watched television and cleaned every nook and cranny until finally, her little brother came to chastise her that night while she was tucking him into bed.

"You don't have that many days left 'till you leave for school, sissy. You should get your books! Then we'll have the mostest books in our entire family~!" Her brother had just this year gotten his first English book, and he was amazed when, every week, he got a new one. They were tiny and easy to read, but he was proud to obtain more and more, finally deciding to count the number and comparing it to the number of book their older brothers had. But since he only got once a week, he wanted to join forces with Kat to 'win' this little game of his.

The red head laughed as she kissed her little brother's head. "All right, All right. Tomorrow." she promised, walking out and closing the door behind her with smile.
