Some people were very odd with the way they turned up out of nowhere offering to guide a very newly found out witch around where she needed to go. Yet that was exactly what happened with the wizard who appeared on the family doorstep one day after she received her letter. He was English like that horrible Sarah Mason so Andrea secretly called him by the most dull name in any translation she could come up with. Mr. Smith. Whether Mr. Smith or Herr Schmidt or whatever the language it all came down to the same thing. Boring and dull and ordinary.

Now Mr. Smith had led both Andrea and her aunt into a pub in Paris. It was very scandalous if Aunt Lisa's face was anything to go by. That brightened Andrea up already but she was very careful not to show it. No need to get herself into her aunt's bad books before the day was over. Anyway, Mr. Smith assured the pair of them that this was the right place for entering an alley where Andrea would need to purchase her school supplies. It all sounded quite thrilling with the weird and wonderful items on the letter which came with her acceptance letter on top of entering the sort of place she would normally be barred from until the age of eighteen.

First though it was apparently time to eat and Mr. Smith ordered Andrea to sit whilst he accompanied her aunt to the counter to get the food. Totally dull and Andrea was not inclined to obey. Thus she moved over to another table where someone else sat. Why sit on your own when you can have company? "I wish to ask you a question," she stated in the best French she could muster since she wasn't sure anyone here could speak German.

So This is a Start? Empty Re: So This is a Start?

Unsurprisingly, Sophie had abandoned him at this noisy pub. She promised to return soon but knowing his sister he figured that would not be very soon. Hassan sighed, retreating to a table alone and wishing his mother had allowed him to bring his physics book. So he settled for pondering the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in his head.

He drank his non-alcoholic butterbeer absentmindedly as he reviewed the constants in his head. The curious eleven-year-old was fairly disappointed by the concept of magic so far. The shopkeepers addressed his inquiries patronizingly, for the most part. Some were just plain incensed. Hassan hadn't meant to vex anyone; he simply wanted answers. He didn't understand what was wrong with that.

Hassan was thinking about how the equation applied to a free-particle when a girl his age sat across from him. He raised his eyebrow. Thankfully she hadn't asked a long question, otherwise he might not have been able to answer properly in French. "Okay, what is it?" he asked in French. The native Arabic speaker was quite proud of himself.

Andrea was off to a brilliant start. So much better than being told to stay where she was she'd managed to start a conversation in a language her French teacher had informed her was badly spoken by one Andrea Ritter. Of course she still needed to actually ask a question but she hadn't thought that far ahead. Well she would have to come up with something fast and something fast in French.

"I was told by Mr. Smith that this where we go to do our shopping for school." She paused with the need to translate from the German in her head into the French. "Only where do we entered into ... what was the name of that Alley again? Amethyst?" A really strange name for an alley and she wondered how on earth shops fitted into an alley anyway. Weren't allies narrow?

Hassan frowned slightly. Amethyst Alley had been a blur to him. "Yes, Amethyst. I believe you take a right and turn left at the corner. It is not very far but it's a narrow fit." Hassan felt somewhat complacent. He was giving directions in proficient French. Hopefully they were the right ones.

The name Smith was English, was it not? "An Englishman is taking you shopping for a French school and he ditched you here?" Hassan asked in disbelief. He knew what it was like to be ditched, but he would have thought a grown man would know better than his flighty sister.

Hassan felt it prudent to introduce himself. "My name is Hassan Owens," he said, extending his hand to the girl. "Pleased to make your acquaintance."

"No. I mean yes he's English but he didn't just drop me off here." Just because Andrea didn't like the man she supposed she owed him to at least be truthful about him. "He's ordering food for us. I just wanted to know how we get out of here into that Alley." This what came of not planning ahead. She hadn't given any thought to what it might have sounded like when she asked her question.

Andrea raised an eyebrow at his strange combination of names. Neither of them sounded anything like the sorts of names she'd expect at a school in France. Well she was Swiss German but his didn't even sound like it came from any of the countries near France. "Oh right." She hastily took the offered hand and shook. "Hassan. I'm Andrea Ritter. Nice to meet you." She bit her lip as she considered a much more question to be asked. "So did you know anything about this sort of thing?" She waved her hand around in the air.

Hassan's timidness started to kick in. He simply nodded to the girl's response, unsure of what to say. "Oh. That is nice of him." He wished he had an adult with him. His father was, predictably, busy and his mother believed sticking around for ten minutes before leaving him with Sophie was sufficient. His mother would probably have been a better guide, although admittedly she did share similar flighty tendencies. Such were the effects of heredity.

Hassan could read the girl's eyebrow raise and immediately felt self conscious. He knew his name was unusual. He gave a shy smile. "Andrea. What accent is that?" he asked quietly, curious. He hoped she didn't take it as offense.

"Magic?" Hassan shrugged. "A little. My adoptive family are magic. I am still a little skeptical," he confessed, "that with a wave of the wand, you can completely change the molecular properties of organisms and objects...it all goes against what I have studied in science. But, a good scientist must be receptive to new ideas and new evidence. You?"

"Is it?" Andrea asked. She wasn't so sure if it was niceness or that he owed the person who wanted him to be her guide. Who was this other person anyway? Andrea really wanted to know but Aunt Lisa would lecture her about rudeness if she did.

"Swiss German," Andrea replied proudly. None of this German nonsense. That was an insult to her nationality. "I live in Zurich but it's not as nice as Lucerne." Well certainly the school she attended there wasn't anywhere near as nice as the one she went to before the accident which led to her move. "What about you?"

The boy's words left Andrea feeling a little lost. It was like being stuck in science lessons again with her trying to interpret the teacher's accent as well as figuring out what on earth she was talking about. "But isn't that well because they kept it well hidden?" she suggested. Aunt Lisa may have thought it nonsense but Dominick with whom Andrea had discussed it at length seemed to think otherwise and he was very smart. "Oh I didn't know a thing about magic. Well sometimes I'd end up doing things I couldn't explain. Like one time I found myself balancing on a door at school."

Hassan didn't know how to respond to her question. It was rhetorical, was it not? How was he supposed to know the intentions of her guide? So he simply shrugged. "I..suppose?" he guessed uncertainly.

Hassan smiled and nodded. "My adopted family formerly lived in Geneva. They liked it...very much. I am Middle Eastern. We live in Dubai. We live in a very nice, cosmopolitan area....but there is widespread poverty. I like my home though," he shrugged.

"I know. But still...it is hard to comprehend. No?" he asked. He seemed to be one of the few skeptics. Everyone else seemed to understand completely and have no doubts. "I wish I understood how it worked. But alas, it seems to be inexplicable," Hassan sighed. He simply couldn't let things have no explanation. It would be on his mind forever.

He smiled again. "So your family are Muggles? Are you excited for school?" Hassan figured that was a safe question.

"I've been to Geneva," Andrea responded with a confirming nod. "It's very nice but I love Lucerne best." His reply half answered her unasked question. Well fully did when it registered he said adopted family. There was so much she wanted to ask on that but she knew from experience how painful it could be explaining about her own family situation that she restrained herself from mentioning anything about it. "It sounds exotic but that's because this is my first time out of Switzerland." It was possibly really strange considering how close so many other countries were to her own but for some reason her family never did like to travel outside their own nation's borders.

She smiled and nodded. "Very hard. My uncle still doesn't quite believe it's true. I suspect though that my Aunt Lisa might have become convinced." Well coming into a pub she couldn't at first see until Andrea pointed it out might have had something to do with it. "Maybe magic doesn't have a good explanation," she suggested. "Maybe it just is." Something which she supposed must have been much harder for someone like Hassan and her cousin to comprehend than herself.

Andrea wasn't sure what the term muggle was but nodded anyway. "I'm not sure about school. My past experience of school wasn't exactly fun and now I won't even have my own house to escape it from." And that had to be the scariest part about going away to school. Not the magic which she hadn't really known existed but the fact that the school wasn't a day school.
