Kayla needed Charms help now. She generally didn't, as it was one of her best subjects. However, Professor Boux could annoy her. She tended to go overboard with assignments, as if they needed to know everything about charms, stuff that was useless. They were studying Memory Charms, so Professor Boux assigned them all to keep a diary. She claimed it would strengthen their memories and be more resilient if they were ever attacked by a memory charm. Kayla believed it was just an excuse to snoop into her student's private lives. Apparently they also had to write about their emotions, as strong emotions were harder to forget. Kayla was basically completely lost.

So she enlisted the help of Greg. He seemed to know more about emotions than she did. Sitting down at a table across from him, she groaned as she stared at a barely filled diary. "We had Quidditch practice today. It was good. The Chasers scored more goals than usual." She looked up. "That's it. I don't know what to say about myself and how I feel. I'm just fine. I'm alive." She really didn't know why she had to write about herself or her feels. It was completely useless.

Emotions Empty Re: Emotions

Gregory listened to Kayla's journal entry. It didn't surprise him much that she was having trouble with it. She wasn't one of those girls who went around crying and complaining about everything. "There isn't a specific way that a journal is supposed to look or sound when you read it," he said, "So don't worry about that too much."

"I think I understand what Prof. Boux is trying to do. I think it is supposed to go a bit deeper than just what happened. Why were your chasers scoring more goals than usual? What was the weather like? What did the pitch look like? What did you do before practice? If you write more detail, feelings will come out, too," he explained.

Hopefully that was enough of an explanation. Greg didn't know if he could even approach it differently. Why was she asking him for emotional help?

Kayla stared at Greg in shock. "We're supposed to write all that?" Why on earth did the Professor have all those questions about her private life, she wondered. It was worth a try. She wrote as she talked. "The Chasers were in a better formation. They guarded each other better and made better passes. The weather was slightly sunny and cloudy. The pitch smelled like fresh-cut grass and was very green. Before practice, I finished all my homework. Except for this one." Kayla put down her quill. "I think this is the part where I'm supposed to start tearing up," she noted.

She looked at Greg. She really appreciated his help and company. He wasn't even the friend she saw most often, but he was the most serious. And she appreciated that. "Do feelings come naturally to you?" she asked. Several of her other friends seemed to have no problem with emotions, but they never took her seriously when she asked how they did it.

Gregory held back a smile as he watched and listened to Kayla talk. She wasn't all that bad a writer. When she looked up at him, he laughed. Just a little bit. "You don't have to cry. No one goes around crying about every single detail of their life. Well, no one I know," Greg corrected. "You're just trying to make something about your day memorable. Something that might trigger your memory someday in the future," he explained. "Now, one Quidditch practice might not be memorable, but something else can be."

Kayla's question caught him off guard. Was he an emotional person? He wasn't for sure. "I guess they do sometimes. I keep most of them to myself. It's not something I think I have to share with the world."

All this writing feelings business was giving Kayla a massive headache. She didn't see how it was useful and she sucked at it. "I don't believe anything very memorable happened today. Or recently." She didn't want to be melancholic and gloomy. She just didn't think there was something remarkable or odd. The Potion explosion in class was amusing. Nothing much. "The Quidditch final is coming up. I really want to win that and beat Montagnard!" She wrote that down. Kayla still didn't feel any strong desires.

She listened to Greg as she wrote. She could relate some parts. Greg wasn't an overemotional pity person at all. She wondered what he could be hiding. "Well, do you think about them?" she asked. "My life seems very normal. No conflicts or anything to really ponder about."

Greg could see her problem. "Yeah. Life can be pretty boring. How about starting with writing about your friends and family? You have some feelings for them, right? Do you like them? Love them? What makes you want to continue your relationship with them?" he suggested.

Gregory squirmed in his seat. He wasn't comfortable with her question. "I-I don't know," he answered. "They're fairly normal, I suppose." He realized how much he sounded like Autumn in that moment. Too logical. Why was that always the got-to behavior for him? It was unattractive. How did Julie-Pierre put up with Autumn's endless energy?

Kayla was stumped. Her brow furrowed as she tried to force her brain to think deep. "Well, Cameron. He's so lovable and I feel bad for him sometimes." That was a feeling and sounded good to her. She loved her family. She didn't have an entirely concrete reason to nor did she think she needed one. "My family are the people I grew up with. I just couldn't imagine them not being there or forgetting about them."

As she wrote about it, the words sunk into her brain. There was a little nagging, questioning voice. Was it really true? Was she all that close with her family? "Honestly," she paused, looking up at Greg. Getting the words out vocally before writing seemed like a good idea. "Sometimes, I don't know about my family. I never got super close to them when I was younger."

She still didn't feel like breaking down or crying. But she had to admit, that statement brought back memories. She remembered when Cameron was adopted, Kayla and the rest of her family were elated. He fit into the family right away. Naturally.

She tried to think about her friends. Just like her family, she had plenty of them. They were all amazing, funny, nice people. At least, they acted like it. Including the one sitting in front of her at the moment.

"There ya go," he replied. "That's getting somewhere. Now think out: how do you feel about your best friend? And what about your enemies?"

Greg felt like Kayla was catching on a bit. But he didn't think that she was aware of the fact that she was catching on.
He was sort of surprised by Kayla's comment on her family. "There's an age gap, Kayla. Same with me and my sister. You can still be closer," he pointed out, kind of angry at himself for mentioning his sister.

"Cam doesn't let anyone in," Greg stated. Kayla probably knew that, but just didn't know how to say it. "He's not going to be hurt unless you pry."

He decided to be quiet. Kayla looked like she was thinking.

Kayla shrugged as she twirled the colorful quill between her fingers. "You're good with coming up with these questions," she admitted. "My best friend is...amazing. She has a good sense of humor. Really nice and supportive." Kayla was deliberately keeping it vague. That summed up all her friends.

"My enemies?" Kayla frowned again. "I don't have one." People could be annoying, but she didn't hate anyone. Everyone seemed to like her too, which sounded arrogant the moment it entered her head. "I try not to be so negative." That sounded like a meaningful thing to write, too.

"Cameron just gets along with them better," she noted. She wanted to let it go now. It was the truth in her view. "Your sister?" she asked, surprised. Greg never much mentioned her. "Oh, the older one with the boyfriend? How is she?"

Greg's statement didn't surprise Kayla. Cameron seemed to get edgy whenever she tried to honestly talk to him. "I'd like it if he'd be more open. I don't see the big deal about letting people actually get to know you." Although she supposed she couldn't really place herself in his shoes at all.

"Oh...uh, thanks," Greg answered. Was he good at asking questions? He didn't think he was. But was he? "They don't have to be enemies. Just the people that you don't like or that bother you. Back to your friends. Maybe the stuff you like to do together? You don't have to answer me out loud. It's a journal. It can be private."

Greg didn't actually want to hear what Kayla thought of her friends. It was a secret that should stay that way. And he didn't want to hear about himself. It would be awkward.

"Yeah. She's fine, I guess. I haven't heard from my family in a week or so," he answered hoping to deflect the conversation away from his sister.

Gregory understood Cameron. Not his whole history or how he always felt. But Greg understood not wanting to be open with people.

"Cam isn't much of a talker. You don't have to look at each other or talk. Just be in the same room with him. It's his way of bonding," Greg tried to explain. Kayla was a bit of the opposite, which was probably the reason why she was so frustrated by her brother.
