Lunch on Me Empty Lunch on Me

Post by Guest Wed May 21, 2014 10:12 pm

Dustin sat alone at a table. He wanted to be alone, he liked the solitude but he also knew that if he was caught alone by his father he would be scolded back home. Dustin wanted to make his father proud more than he wanted to spend time on his own. He watched the condensation on his drink roll down the glass and to the table. Well in which case he should invite someone to sit with him.

It didn’t take long. He spotted a girl wandering about, even if there was places to seat herself alone, Dustin knew he needed to invite her over. If not to be social then to be polite. He wouldn’t feel right letting a girl wander around without invitation to join. Maybe she was having a bad day.

Dustin waved to her, hoping to get her attention. “Excuse me?” He called, “I have a free seat here if you would like to join me?” Dustin’s facade was currently down, if she should accept he guessed he would fall into that role of being a ‘cool guy’ might crop up again. He offered her a smile, reaching a hand up to ruffle his messy curls.

McKenna glanced around nervously. She still hadn’t found her mother and the only place she knew in the alley was the his restaurant. She chewed on her lip. Something, scratch that someone caught her eye.

A boy about her age was waving to her. She looked around then pointed to herself before walking closer to the table. “Are you sure? I’d hate to intrude on you.” She bit her lip, sitting across from him. He did offer, she reminded herself. McKenna smiled gently. “Hello, how are you?” She asked nicely. “I have such a bad wandering problem. My mum is gonna kill me when she finds me.” She babbled, then stopped. This boy probably didn’t care about her troubles.

“It’s not any trouble at all!” He made the point to smile at her kindly. It wasn’t easy to be vocal and invite people to be with him, but it wasn’t too difficult to be kind to them. This girl was no different. Being nice to her would be the easiest part of their conversation. It was having the brass to actually hold a conversation and keep it running.

When she smiled back he felt himself relax a little. “I’m a little antsy to go shopping to tell you the truth, but otherwise I’m okay.” He listened patiently and nodded, “wandering problem? Well maybe if you stay still for a little while she can find you and I’ll try and keep you out of trouble. I’m Dustin by the way, Dustin Lovette.” He thrust his hand over the table and offered for her to shake it. “Are you thirsty or hungry by any chance?”

This boy was so nice and he had a kind smile. She silently sighed in relief that she had run into someone nice. What if she had run into some child wizard abductor! That would’ve been bad and then her mum would never have found her and McKenna really needed to keep her overactive imagination in line.

“Yeah? I’m a muggleborn, so all of this is nerve wracking and exciting. My older sister was first year last year. So it was exciting to get letters from her. Yeah… I’ve never been able to sit still. Mum says it’s my fatal flaw.” She giggled and took his hand. “Pleasure to meet you, Dustin Lovette. I’m McKenna Arnett.” She grinned, shaking his hand then let go placing her hands in her lap. “I’m a little thirsty. Why?” She tilted her head.

Dustin felt the words just behind his lips, "Hello McKenna, pleasure to meet you too," but he just couldn't push them past his teeth. Instead he smiled shyly down at his drink for a moment before managing to speak up and carry on their conversation. His social self wasn't offering him much help at the moment and he wasn't entirely sure why. All he wanted was a conversation that wasn't too straining. Already this was heading in that direction.

"Well there's no reason to be nervous, really. Your sister is at Beauxbatons? I'm the eldest in my family. I guess I should send letters to my little sister.." He didn't know how to respond to her statement about wandering so he just remained quiet about it. "Could I offer you a drink?" He asked, presenting the good manners he had always been taught.

McKenna noted his silence and simply smiled nicely. He did seem very shy, but this was good that he invited her over to speak with him. This would definitely help with his shyness… or make it worse… Hopefully it’d be the former.

“That is true, my older sister is a second year. My twin sister will be with me too.” She smiled happily. McKenna couldn’t imagine going to school without Cori. “Oh! You should definitely write to your little sister. It’s exciting to get mail delivered by an owl. Melanie would write one letter to our parents then one to Cori and myself.” She smiled gently. “Oh, uh, sure. I can pay for it though.” McKenna started to pull out her coin purse.

Lunch on Me Empty Re: Lunch on Me

Dustin knew his father would be disappointed in him. This wasn’t how he had been taught to act. He was holding back and that wasn’t particularly the best way to appear to be a leader. So Dustin tried again, more determined to put on the image that he usually had no trouble showing new people. Sure it wasn’t the real him, but it was still part of him, technically.

He nodded, listening intently. “Twin?” He asked, trying to prompt her to talk more because that meant he wouldn’t have to, but that dream was short lived as she suggested that he should write to his little sister, Emmalyn. Thinking about it she would want to know what the school was like and if he was doing okay without her. She was definitely much spunkier than he was. He wondered what kind of trouble she would get into while he was away. “Oh, no, no please let me pay for it, my treat for joining me.” He said quickly, a warm smile on his lips, “please.”

He didn’t give her much of a chance to protest before he hopped up from his seat and strode along to order the drink, and a few moments later he returned with it for her. “There you go, McKenna.”

“Yes, a twin.” McKenna smiled at him. “Her name is Cori, she’s smart, really smart. Never gets in trouble like myself. Though…we torment our older sister.” She laughed quietly. “I generally take the blame for that. I’m older than her by a few minutes.” She babbled so easily about things people probably couldn't care less about hearing.

“I.. oh, okay.” She watched him get up and bit her lip. He didn’t even let her protest. “Thank you very much, Dustin.” McKenna smiled and took a sip of her drink. “I can pay you back another time.” She wasn’t sure what else to bring up now. Plus, Dustin didn’t seem too talkative either.
